RULES FOR CLUB COMPETITIONS

INTRODUCTION

These Rules apply to competitions administered respectively by the Ladies and Mens Sections and to mixed competitions.

DEFINITIONS

"Committee" means the relevant Section committee or in the case of mixed competitions the organisers of such competitions.

"Competition Secretary" means a representative of the Committee with delegated authority in the running of competitions.

COMPETITION ENTRIES

Competitions are only open to fully paid-up playing members, junior members or life members. Entries received after the specified closing date are not accepted.

Entry to the competitions may be on forms provided for the purpose before the start of the season or on forms during the course of the season or merely by reporting and being ready as required on the day of the competition as prescribed by the Committee.

Entry to any competition is subject in addition to qualification under the eligibility rules, if any, associated with each particular Section and with each particular competition and is further subject to the payment of the entry fee determined at the Club annual general meeting either at the time of entry, if prescribed, or otherwise before playing.

RINKS

Availability of rinks for club competitions is subject to the following priorities:-

First : Rinks booked for national and county games.

Second : Rinks booked in advance for games or coaching, as authorised by the Club.

Third : Club competitions.

Other forms of play have a lower priority as far as the use of rinks is concerned. Except for rinks in use in accordance with the above priorities all other rinks, including those being used for other purposes, must be included in the draw for a competition rink.

No bookings are to be made on Mondays or for periods scheduled on the day of the Mixed Midweek competition. Rinks not in use at the start of competitions scheduled on these days may be used for other club competitions but cannot be booked in advance.

RULES

<><><><><><>1. All  games shall be played under the Laws adopted by the English Bowling Association/English Womens Bowling Association except where specifically noted in these Rules. Where exceptions do not occur the EBA/EWBA Laws will not be restated. The games shall be played at Caversham Bowling Club unless unforeseen circumstances prompt the Committee to declare otherwise.

    2. Competitions are not open to any player who belongs to another club and who has entered any of that club's competitions.

    3. Arrangements for competitions held on Finals Days will be determined by the Competition Secretaries.

    4. Procedures for the draw will be decided by the Committee. In all rounds preceding the final the first named player, or skip in a team game, is initially responsible for offering arrangements to play the game. All opponents are jointly responsible for ensuring the game is played by the closing date for the round. In the event of failure, if neither party acknowledges fault and concedes the tie and if the Competition Secretary is unable to determine sole fault both parties will be scratched, subject to any appeal under Rule 11 below.

    5. Settled arrangements to play must be recorded in the clubhouse diary. In singles games the first named player is responsible for obtaining a marker unless with his/her agreement the opponent offers to do so instead. The marker must be a current member of the Club and must be or shall have been a playing member of the relevant Section, provided he or she is not a provisional member.

    6. Except where otherwise specifically stated "greys" shall be worn for all rounds up to and including the semi-final and "whites" in the final.

    7. A rink shall not be chosen beforehand but must be drawn immediately prior to the start of the game using the device provided by the Club. Excepting any rink excluded by the Laws, all available rinks must be included in the draw. In all singles games the marker shall conduct the draw in the presence of the players.

    8. No competitor may practise or take part in a roll-up on a day on which he/she is due to play in a competition. Participation in another competition or match earlier in the day must be declared to the opponent(s). The opponent(s) shall have the option of having the rink used excluded from the draw.

    9. When a competitor fails to be ready to play 30 minutes after the scheduled starting time the opposing player or team shall be awarded the game unless both parties mutually agree to play then or at some other time before the round closing date.

    10. At the conclusion of a game the scorecard must be signed by both players in a singles game or by both skips in a team game. The scorecard should then be stored in the rack located in the clubhouse. It is the responsibility of the winner(s) to enter the name(s) of the winner(s) on the competition draw sheet.

    11. Any difficulty, grievance or unresolved dispute should be reported to the Competition Secretary for advice or determination at the earliest opportunity, but in any case not later than the closing date for the round. If either party is dissatisfied with the advice or decision of the Competition Secretary the latter shall refer the matter to the Committee. If circumstances permit the Committee may refer directly to the parties involved but their decision, as communicated by the Chairman of the Committee, will be final.

    12. These Rules shall all apply to all the competitions unless otherwise stated. Additional rules for specific competitions follow hereafter.

CHAMPIONSHIP

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn competition for singles players on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of four bowls. The winner of each game is the first player to reach 21 shots.

NOVICES

<><><><><><>This is a drawn competition for singles players who have not won a scratch singles competition at any outdoor bowling club. It is played on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of four bowls. The winner of each game is the first player to reach 21 shots.

HANDICAP

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn competition for singles players on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of four bowls. The winner of each game is the first player to reach 21 shots. The player with the lower handicap starts with a score which is the difference between the two handicaps. If both players have the same handicap, they each start on 0.

2. A handicap, a number of shots from 0 to 9 inclusive, will be attributed to each competitor in accordance with the criteria given below. It is intended that the application of the handicap will give players a more even chance of success. The baseline for assessment will be a player of less than two years experience who has not won an outdoor singles competition. Experience and achievement count irrespective of the club at which they were gained. For the purposes of this rule, membership for part of a season counts as a full season, except where a player leaves one club and joins another in the same season which will count only once.

3. The factors taken into account in handicap assessment are playing experience, achievements in club singles competitions, with additional penalties for current status, and county recognition.

TWO WOOD SINGLES

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn competition for singles players on a straight knock-out basis to determine a player to represent the Club, in the following year, in the Berkshire County Bowling Association Two Wood Singles 'Champion of Champions' competition. Each player will use a set of two bowls and the winner of each game is the player leading after 21 ends. In the event of a tie in the score at this stage an extra end or ends shall be played until a result is achieved.

SENIORS

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn singles competition open only to those players who have reached the age of 65 years, or who would do so before 1st May in the year of entry.

2. Each game is played on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of four bowls. The game consists of a maximum of three sets, the winner being the first player to win two sets.

3. All sets comprise a maximum of 7 ends except in the Final where this is increased to 9 ends. A set in which one player cannot catch up is terminated immediately.

4. A second or third set will be started by the winner of the previous set from the end where it finished.

5. If the scores are level at the end of a set an extra end shall be played immediately. Players toss a coin for choice to decide who plays first.

PAIRS

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn pairs competition played on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of four bowls. The team leading the game after 21 ends are the winners.

2. If there is an odd number of entries, the Competition Secretary will attempt to recruit one more player to enter the competition. Failing this, the Competition Secretary will attempt to find one entrant who would be prepared to withdraw his entry. Failing this, a draw will be made to eliminate one entrant. A player who has withdrawn or who has been withdrawn in these circumstances shall have any entry fee paid returned to him. Once there is an even number of entries the players will be ranked in accordance with their handicap rating whether or not they have entered the Handicap competition (see HANDICAP competition above). For the purposes of this ranking only, the ratings of previous winners and runners-up of the Pairs will be increased by half a point and a quarter point respectively.

3. Once ranking is complete players will be separated into two pools at the median position. Players with a rating higher than the median will be assigned to Pool A and players with a lower rating than the median will be assigned to Pool B. Players with the median rating will be drawn to either pool so that both pools are the same size. After this, the draw for partners will take place. One player from Pool A will be drawn to partner one from Pool B, and so on until all players have partners.

3. The draw for the inter-club stages of the competition will be undertaken by officers of the Benevolent Fund Triples Competition and notified to the Club Secretary.

4. The players taking part in the team's first game shall constitute the team. After the first game, one and the same substitute may stand in for any member of the team and play in any position in any future round of the competition provided he has not already entered, conceded or played for another team in the competition.

FOURS

<><><><><><>1. This is a drawn fours competition played on a straight knock-out basis, each player using a set of two bowls. The team leading the game after 21 ends are the winners.

2. Players enter individually. If there is not a multiple of 4 players, then the Competition Secretary will attempt to recruit further players to make a multiple of 4. Failing this, he will attempt to find 1, 2 or 3 entrants who would be prepared to withdraw. Failing this, the last 1, 2 or 3 players entering will be withdrawn.

3. Players are seeded, and teams of 4 are drawn.

4. Substitute players will not be permitted after the draw has been made. If a player is absent the game shall proceed provided at least three players of the defaulting team are present. In the defaulting team the number of bowls shall be made up by the lead and second each playing a set of three bowls. One third of the total shots scored by the defaulting team, including fractions, shall be deducted at the end of the game. A defaulting team unable to meet these conditions shall forfeit the game.

3. The format of the game on any occasion and the number of ends, not exceeding 18, will be determined by the Organiser or, in his absence, by his assistants depending on the availability of rinks and the number of competitors. On every occasion each competitor will draw a token, which will indicate his rink and team. Where two or more competitors tie on points scored the player amongst them with the highest total number of shots recorded from his maximum of ten games or less will be declared the winner.
