Bowling at CavershamAt Caversham BC we cater for both the competitive bowler and the occasional social bowler. Friendly matches Throughout the season we play friendly matches of rinks or triples, at home and away against other local clubs. These are both at weekends and also weekday afternoons (Ladies) and weekday evenings (Men). For many beginner bowlers, these games provide the first taste of competitive, but friendly, bowling. League games Caversham’s men's and ladies' bowling sections compete in the Berkshire Bowls Associations' leagues and competitions. Men’s Kennet League games (sponsored by the Reading Chronicle) are played on Tuesday evenings throughout the season, while those for Ladies in the Thames Valley League are played on Thursday afternoons. For those members aged 60 or over we also field two teams on Friday afternoon in the Men’s Kennet LX Triples leagues.
Club competitions Caversham bowlers compete against each other for club honours in our club knockout competitions which are played throughout the season, culminating in our finals weekend in September. There are singles, pairs, triples and rinks competitions for men and ladies, mixed pairs, triples and rinks and singles competitions restricted to bowlers who have not previously won a club competition. Prizes are awarded at our annual presentation dinner after the close of the season. | |
Outside competitions Established bowlers will probably also compete in one or more Berkshire County or National competitions. Again offering singles, pairs, triples and rinks matches, these games provide the bowler with the opportunity to play competitive bowls against other teams or individuals from the local area, perhaps progressing to play against winners from other counties, with the ultimate aim of reaching the national finals. Special matches There will normally be several special club matches during the season, at which all our bowlers have an opportunity to get together for fun. At Caversham we play President's v. Captain's matches, and a Men v. Ladies game annually. In addition Mixed Competitions are held each Bank Holiday where the entry fee includes a nominal amount that enables small prizes to be awarded at the end of the game. Weekly 'Points' Competitions These take place at the following times: | Ladies | Mondays | Arrive by 1.50pm to commence play at 2.00pm. A cup of tea is available at 4.00pm. | | Men | Mondays | Arrive by 5.50pm to commence play at 6.00pm. | | Mixed | Wednesdays | Arrive by 10.50am to commence play at 11.00am. Play finishes at 1.00pm. |
These are ideal sessions for new bowlers to meet new colleagues and to play the game in a competitive yet informal and friendly way. Roll-ups As if this weren’t enough, you'll often find our bowlers on the green in spare moments, playing informal games or just practicing (we call it ‘rolling up’). For new bowlers, coaching sessions can be arranged, and club bowls and equipment are available for use before the beginner bowler decides to buy his/her own equipment. |
