After another visit to close friends in North Wales he made another major change, a move into slate. Taking the raw material he would cut it, to fashion and smooth it with endless hours of work. The results were as ever compelling, the pieces sometimes harsh, austere and always forceful.

Previously he had dictated the precise measurements and compositon of the stone, but now, with hands weak and increasingly feeble from arthritis, he was less equipped . He remained as determined to see his will imposed upon the material but is was a daily battle. Perhaps as an antedote to this labour, he moved into wall reliefs that were much easier to construct and reflective of the high tech age that he had entered.Originally in brilliant white then colour but using orbs and lines in a fashion reminiscent of the metal battle dashing of the early 50’s.
