History

A long time ago in an ancient land called Northumberland two brothers named, Barry (Cooch) and Dennis Winlow, formed a band. Being interesting looking, rather than handsome in the classical sense, it seemed obvious to name the band The Ugly Brothers. The value of manmade fibres used in the production of Hawaiian shirts was changed forever.

Cooch is now to be found on bass in the excellent Poor Boys whilst Dennis can be seem in and around Ashington and Morpeth in all his sartorial elegance.

Over the years several members have come and gone and sometimes come and gone again!

These include Bill (Frenchie) French on bass, now to be found in The Fabulous Balls Brothers and the Theresa Watson Band. Steve Martin on bass to be found in Faith Healer. Lots of drummers have kept the beat over the years. Paul Mills, Ian Forsyth, Bob Steel, Danny Davison, Alan Goldsworthy and Brian all whacked their drums in The Uglies but we're not sure what they are doing now. Tom Maley left to pursue an artistic career, both piss artist and sculpture being included but we are not sure if pursued at the same time.

Guitarists have been fairly limited to Dennis Winlow, one of the founding members. Ally Lee was an Ugly before he was in the late great Hillbillies from Outer Space.

Wendy Saddler and Vaughn John ( Yes I have got the name the right way around.) added their vocal class to the band for a number of years. Wendy went on to form Weird Looking Strange Thing or was it Strange Looking Weird Thing with her sister Carole. Vaughn has concentrated on his business and keeping Cooch company in Morpeth's Joiner's Arms, just to be sociable.

Both have made guest appearancea since leaving the band, whilst under the influence of strong drink.

Also appearing on vocals have been Delia and Pat.

Over the years we've had John Steel from The Animals sitting in on Drums and have been joined on stage by such noteables as Mick Whittaker and Bob Davidson from The Poor Boys.

The origins of why all members of the band have an almost fatal attraction to loud Hawaiian shirts is lost in time. It is enough to say that the tradition remains to this day, with band members insisting on the natural fibresof polyester and rayon and sticking to the shops specializing in this attire, Matalan, Primark and TK Max.

The common market has helped keep the band in suitable attire over the years by returning donations of clothes from the 70s to supplement the shirts found for 2 euros in the flea markets of Portugal.
