| John Power + Madeleine Brooks | |
| John Power from The La’s is on a solo tour and musical journey. Alongside the myth-touched songwriter, Lee Mavers, John Power was the other constant member of legendary Liverpool band the La’s. Power joined on bass in 1986 fresh from a city council scheme for aspirant musicians, and would keep the faith for six years. The La’s self-titled debut from 1990, sustains a fervent cult of admirers but according to the group it never captured the true spirit of the band or the extraordinary set of songs that appear on it. Though he was de facto mouthpiece and ever-enthusiastic public face of the La’s, compromised by a burgeoning writing talent that would not be satisfied by occasional live outings – Power went on to take charge of Cast, a formidable live four piece with whom he would sell bewildering amounts of records with (1995’s All Change the biggest and fastest selling debut album on the Polydor label of the 90’s). Whether on the charts on magazine covers or headlining at the Glastonbury festival, Power the pop star was a phenomenon that lasted four long players until 2002 when he went solo and released the critically acclaimed ‘Willow She Weeps’ last year. Enjoy the show la’. With support from Madeleine Brooks who is back form her two year lay off. | ![]() |

| Cabaret Heaven with Mundo Jazz, Andrew Bailey and Feluka | |
| Dust off your sequins and fluff up yer boas, the cabaret's back at the Trades with a glorious opening show. Mundo Jazz is a hilarious spoof world music star described by the Daily Express as " a sort of live latino spinal tap; very very funny". He's bringing his own band just so they can smash up the hotel room afterwards. Andrew Bailey was there at the dawn of alternative comedy and has grown odder and more wonderful by the year, described by the Guardian as "one of comedy's true originals" And that was before most of Feluka were even born. This young Leeds band are getting a name for their danceable fusion of dub, reggae and North African rai. Throw in Peggy, Bernard, DJDJ and Captain Bendy and it should be a classic. | ![]() |

| Climate Chaos Kitchen Permaculture and Transition Towns | |
|
Andy Goldring from the Permaculture Association talks about the relevance of Permaculture to a Transition Initiative. Permaculture is not just about gardening . . . It is a design system for creating sustainable human environments, based on observation of natural cycles. Whether it is applied to a yard, a home or a community, it is a way of making any space into a self contained system that supplies it’s own needs, regenerates waste within itself and creates abundance. The original idea for Transition Towns came from a class of permaculture students who wanted to apply their design skills to address how their community could move from oil dependence to greater local resilience. Watch the Climate Chaos Kitchen Video Booth footage here. |

| Steve Tilston’s Trades Roots with Chris Smither | |
| Chris Smither is highly regarded amongst his peers – another one of those musicians’ favourites. On previous visits to the UK he’s performed on Later with Jools Holland, and appeared on radio two with Johnnie Walker and Paul Jones. Synthesising folk and blues for more than 30 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original. Having released twelve albums since the early 1970s, Chris is a profound songwriter, a blistering guitarist and, as he puts it, a 'one-man band to the bone.' Chris melds the styles of his two major influences, Lightnin' Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, into his own signature guitar sound. His music continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and humanist philosophers. | ![]() |

| Jackie Leven | |
| All kinds of myths revolve around musicians, but Jackie Leven’s life is far more exciting and trouble riddled than most of the legends. Living is squats, sleeping rough, encountering desperate people with mental illness, violent gangs and heroin . . . the stories come out in his songs. And, helped by his Romany heritage, what a voice to sing them with! Through the years with daunting rock band Doll by Doll and years of solo work Jackie has built a following as committed as he is to the music. A string of excellent albums have followed, and the latest, “Elegy For Johnny Cash” takes a unique and candid look at last journeys, and the people who make them. | ![]() |
