| Their support slot for Wilko Johnson drew praise from audience and headline act alike. Long Trick play raucous juke joint music. They throw in the occasional reflective number too. Dan Collins has a unique rhythm based guitar style influenced by Fred McDowell and Son House but he plays it electric. Dave Rigg plays harmonica with a rare intensity. With Jerome Dineen (Bass) and Tim Gilroy (drums) they are an inspirational way to start your New Year. |

| Steve’s guest this month is singer, songwriter, melodeon, banjo, dulcimer and bouzouki player, bandleader, arranger, broadcaster, dance caller, teacher, step dancer, entrepreneur, folk club organiser, record label boss, sallow-faced wit, raconteur and all-round good guy, Pete Coe in many ways represents the
backbone of the modern folk revival." Colin Irwin MOJO & original BBC Radio 2 Artist Database. A fixture on the folk club scene since the 70s, Pete was described by Radio 2 as “a one-man folk industry”. To which one reviewer retorted “An industry? More a multi-national”. | Come and witness the surreal punk, funk, catholic, electric comedy phenomenon that is Mik Artistik's Ego Trip. Mik gives the impression he’s just escaped from a sanatorium and crashed the stage. He probably has. He is described as “unpredictable, unnerving and with the tendency to incorporate his audience in the act, impossible to ignore”, and by Johnny Vegas as “the Mad Professor of Comedy”. |

| Nancy Elizabeth | ||
| Nancy Elizabeth is going places, albeit at her own speed, and we are lucky to get her at the Trades as her career takes off. Anne Bilston (Guardian) wrote that Nancy “has the kind of voice that rings out like something being struck: a bell or a bar or a billet”, and that her music is “bare and somehow devotional. Every song seems cloistered, removed from the cut and thrust and the wild, hot fuss of life.” A review of new album Wrought Iron found “a record of subtle beauty, subdued yet immediate. For every Tori Amos there’s a PJ Harvey and Nancy Elizabeth could just be of the same lineage - haunting, ethereal and totally compelling, everything a singer-songwriter should be.” She is described as “a beacon for future folkies” and “the best thing to come out of Wigan since Poole's Pies”. A must see. |

Love Music Hate Racism with ![]() |
||
| Love Music Hate Racism uses the positive energy of music to fight the racism peddled by organisations like the BNP. Tonight Pete Bentham & the Dinner Ladies give it loads of positive energy, delivering kitchen sink punk rock n roll from Liverpool to the Upper Valley. Pete (guitar/vocal), Marigoldy (bass/vocal) and Gabrielle Fray Bentos (drums/vocal) are not at the subtle end of the spectrum, but they’re certainly entertaining – “hopelessly lovable … a way more fun version of Pulp, and a Victoria Wood sketch all rolled into one”. |

+ Fat Rascals + DJ Dillinger P |
||
| Formed in the working class suburbs of industrial Birmingham in 1978, The Beat arose at a time of high unemployment and social upheaval. From the outset the band‘s message of hope and peace would later, alongside The Specials, see them heralded as forerunners of the 2-Tone Ska movement. Their hits include “Tears of a Clown”, “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “Can’t Get Used to Losing You”, “Hands Off … She’s Mine” and “Stand Down Margaret”. The Beat disbanded at the height of their fame but, after much urging, reformed in 2003, with Ranking Jnr on vocal duties alongside his dad, Ranking Roger. Their last gig at the Trades was a great night, so book early for this one. With support from local favourites the Fat Rascals. |

Cabaret Heaven with and Frank Dapper |
||
| We're excited to welcome the hilarious Zoe Lyons who's won a hatful of comedy awards. Funny Women Winner 2004, If.comedy best newcomer nominee in Edinburgh 07, and Best Joke of Edinburgh 08. (We'll try and make sure she tells it!) The Observer said she was "confident and razor-sharp" and her incisive and warm style has led to a string of TV and radio credits as well as becoming a patron of London Pride. She's joined by Frank Dapper, foolish but incredible manipulator of tennis rackets, balls and pretty much anything you can throw at him in a jaw-dropping show. There'll be plenty of surprises from Peggy, Bernard and the crew and a guest DJ. |
