Steve Tilston's Trades Roots with Robin Williamson |
|
|
Tonight Steve’s guest is Robin Williamson, founder in the 60's of the influential Incredible String Band and the Merry Band of the 70's. Robin has been a key figure at the forefront of the storytelling revival in Europe and America since the 80's. His cv is littered with names like Renbourn and Jansch. His interest in Celtic lore has led to several books and a position as Honorary Chief Bard of The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. Since his Incredible String Band days Williamson has been part of taking folk music in new and wayward directions. This is a multi talented singer, harper, guitar player, whistle player, songwriter, poet, artist, bard, master storyteller. Steve Tilston never lets us down. |

| Into The Valley presents Zed Bias (Dubspot/Madd Slinky) and Denis Jones (live) | |
|
Into The Valley is a new club night hosting a broad range of cutting edge music from the very best national and local talent. It promises to offer brand new sounds spanning different genres, including leftfield acoustic-techno, nu-disco, house, phuture bass and breaks from some of the UK's best DJs and experimental live acts. Lancashire-born Denis Jones is a self-taught guitarist playing a uniquely textured blend of rhythmical future-folk. Recently adopted as a Futuresonic festival's resident artists, Jones is one of Manchester's rising stars. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of traditional, song-based music, he inventively mixes these influences with modest experimental electronics. Meanwhile producer, remixer and DJ Zed Bias has been at the cutting edge of dance music for the last 10 years, producing breaks, beats, house and more recently, dubstep. A favourite with Giles Peterson, his internationally renowned set of jack-the-box grooves will create a memorable night for both your head and feet. Support comes from local jocks Chris Price (What the Freak/Feeling Up) and Flash Atkins (paperecordings/We Are Woodville). |

Quinteto Mambo Jambo serve up a hot mix of latin dancefloor styles including salsa & son, chachacha, cumbia, samba & rumba, plus the influence of Congolese & other African sounds adds spice and freshness to their infectious mix. They create a lot of bum wiggling and hip swinging. Having just returned from a very successful trip to Brazil and Cuba they’ve added Cuban approval and authenticity. The Trades Club become a sweaty Cuban taverna – we’ll get some extra rum in… As bandleader and singer Pete Jack explains “Dancers go crazy for these Latin rhythms because they’re such fun to dance to; we’ve been out to places like Cuba and Brazil and learned songs & styles from bands out there so hopefully we can give more than just a flavour”. |

| The Ukrainians + Chorna Roza | |
| The Ukrainians continue to mix up their winning concoction of Western punk-pop and traditional Ukrainian sounds, a blend that's always best served live. As 'Q' magazine says "Going to a Ukrainians gig is like being at the mother of all parties". The Ukrainians have played the Glastonbury and Womad Festivals in the UK as well as over a hundred major World Music, Folk, Indie and Rock events throughout Western, Central and Eastern Europe and North America. As well as their own compositions and re-interpretations of centuries’ old traditional Ukrainian folk classics, the band has become notorious for its 'Ukrainianised versions' of classic Western pop songs by The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Prince, Kraftwerk and The Velvet Underground. The Ukrainians appear in
Mojo magazine's '20 Landmark Peel Sessions' alongside The Buzzcocks, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, Billy Bragg and Joy Division. Their new album ‘Diaspora’ is out during this week. Chorna Roza are a young Ukrainian band, dedicated to playing traditional Ukrainian music in contemporary fashion. They are known largely for their raw and energetic style and for entertaining crowds mainly at zabavas and special occasions such as weddings and birthdays. |

| Cabaret Heaven with John Hegley and Les Vegas |
|
| Whoopee! We've been trying to get John Hegley for years and here he is with an extended show "Beyond our Kennel". In the 30 odd years since his John Peel session he's been described as many things -"more Elvis Costello than Alan Bennett", by the Scotsman and "bloody marvellous" by the NME - and has carved out a niche as one of the nation's favourite poets with a glorious comic interest in dogs, glasses, Luton Town and a piercing observational wit. Don't miss him. As well as some comic support we've also got fabulous dance show band Les Vegas and the International Playboys of Rhythm playing "Big Spender" and a host of glamorous classics. Plus DJs, Peggy, Bernard and Dave. | ![]() |
