Whooper Swan
Cygnus cygnus
Prior's Fen, Huntingdonshire - 5 October 2002

In the Peterborough area, Bewick's Swans normally outnumber Whoopers by around 75:1, with Whoops normally found in discrete family parties and often away from the herds of feeding Bewick's.

These birds were among a group of five - the first returning birds of the 2002/03 winter - and had obviously been attracted to the large herd of resident Mute Swans down. Well, a herd of white blobs is a herd of white blobs to a high-flying swan!
