I'm often surprised just how badly we do around the Peterborough area for passage waders, but I guess any bird passing overhead can probably see the distant shimmer of both Grafham and Rutland, looking sea-like on the horizon, to lure them past our mosaic of gravel pits.
Or is it that we simply have too many little nooks and crannies for waders to hide away in, and we just can't cover them all at the same time?
Either way, I rarely pass up the opportunity to enjoy good waders locally. When Spotted Redshank and Wood Sandpiper, two of my favourite waders, are found on my local patch (by new boy Kevin Durose - soon cutting a dash with his rare and scarce bird finding since his arrival), I'm soon beating a path to them.
The Spot Red stayed on into the evening, when I also encountered nine Greenshank (not seen earlier in the day), but there was no sign of the Wood Sand (shame).
