Red-breasted Merganser
Mergus serrator
River Welland, near Crowland, Lincs - 10 April 2004

One of my bogey birds laid to rest, with this fine pair of RB Merg's taking me to 209 for the area. Having missed one last December, I really hadn't  banked on it falling so quickly!

When Katie Fuller and I arrived, the birds were about half a mile north of Crowland bridge. We pulled up and I just rattled off a couple of shots when all the birds on the river took flight! A bloody jogger on the other bank. We jumped in the car, but no sooner had we followed the birds north and relocated them, the jogger was upon us and the birds were off again. This happened four times before we eventually lost the birds heading off strongly north - just as Mike Weedon and Will Bowell arrived! Ouch!

We continued north to where the road leaves the riverside and continued on foot to within sight of Cowbit House. From here we could see a long stretch of the river heading north towards the area boundary and Spalding. And there in the middle of the Tufties were the Mergs. Fantastic for Mikey and Will. A long conversation ensued about where the area boundary was - none of us knew! But on returning home, we were able to check that Mikey and Will's views where well within area by at least a couple of miles.
