Scarce Chaser
Libellula fulva
Woodwalton Fen NNR, Cambridgeshire

Scarce Chaser is the rarest of the three chaser species found in Britain. It is one of my favourite British dragonflies; the females and immature males are amongst the most attractive of British insects.

The black 'saddle' on this male is formed by the blue pruinescence (a bluish bloom which develops with maturity) wearing off during mating. The 'saddle' is where the female holds on to the male.
