A bog-standard bit of grass can be turned into a vital ingredient in any garden feeding station. I keep the grass pretty short - just long enough for those ground-probing species such as thrushes, Starlings and Jackdaws to enjoy searching for natural invertebrate prey as well as raisins and kitchen scraps I throw out each night.
A good lawn is also a great attraction for the local hedgehogs who search it at night for insects and earthworms.
