the feeders

Two small trees hold up to seven feeders. In the left hand picture you can just see a metal pole to the left of the trunk.
When the birds were reluctant to feed from the feeders hanging from the open, low branches, I erected the pole in the middle of the tree on which a 1.5 litre seed feeder sits, and a 1 litre seed feeder hangs from the metal arm within the tree's branches. A 1/2 litre seed feeder and a 1/2 litre peanut feeder hang from the lower branches.

The picture on the right shows three different uses of feeders.

1) a 1/2 litre seed feeder - I feed Vine House Farm Premium Seed Mix in all four of my seed feeders. The husk-free sunflower hearts are an important high-protein food source for finches and sparrows, all of which also feed on the smaller seeds such as millet (red and white) and rape.

2) a 3/4 litre peanut feeder - premium nuts behind wire fed all year round. A good source of protein and fat.

3) a 1/2 litre wire peanut feeder filled with hair! My hairdresser kindly saves her clients' hair on request and lets me take it away by the bag-load. And some species definitely prefer blondes - at least the blond hair always goes first!
