Mark out a grid. About 15 yards by 7. Two players, one attacker and one defender. The defender starts with the ball.
The defender passes the ball firmly to the attacker. The defender chases in after the ball to defend against the attacker who tries
to dribble past the defender. The attacker is trying to get to the defender's start line. The defender is trying to
either force the attacker out of the grid, or to 'turn' the attacker.
The main points to watch for are:
- Defender quickly closing down the attacker
- Defender not getting too close to the attacker unless there is a chance to make the tackle
- The defenders stance. Make sure the defender is not 'square on' but is leading with one foot. Something akin to the stance on a surf-board is perfect
- Make surethe defender is slightly to one side of the attacker when jockeying so that they are 'showing' the attacker to one side but not leaving the other exposed
- Whn moving backward, the defender should not cross their feet, as this can leave them unable to move away quickly
You can progress this drill by changing it to two attackers and two defenders, on a wider grid.
