This is a great way to get your quieter players to start using their voices. It is also very tiring and
good fun. The kids love it.
Give each player a ball, and spread them out in a circle (the centre circle on a pitch is ideal).
Tell one of your quieter players that when you shout the number one, they are to shout the command 'STOP', and the other players should stop with their foot on the ball when they hear the command STOP from that player.
Have the players dribble the ball (a jog) one way around the circle. Shout the number one. The chosen player should shout STOP. The players should all stop with their foot on the ball.
Next, choose anothr quiet player. Tell that player that when you shout 'TWO', they should shout 'TURN'. On the command TURN the players should turn and start
jogging and dribbling the other way around the circle.
Get the players going around the circle again. Shout 'TWO'. The chosen player should shout
TURN, and all players should head the other way around the circle. Shout TWO a few more times (turning the players) before again shouting ONE (causing them to stop). Vary the gaps between shouts. Make some very quick, and some longer.
Carry on with this method with more numbers. See if you can get to EIGHT. Keep the calls varied. Some examples are:
- STOP
- TURN
- NEXT (causing them to leave their ball and move to start dribbling the ball in front of them)
- LAST (causing them to leave their ball, turn, and start dribbling the ball that was behind them
- FORWARD TWO (causing them to leave their ball and move forward two balls - vary the number)
- BACK THREE (leave their ball and go back three balls - vary the number)
- HEADS (Stop, and sing 'Heads and shoulders, knees and toes' before carrying on)
- PRESS-UPS (Stop and do 5 press-ups before continuing)
Keep the instructions simple, get your quieter players to do all the shouting. Shout the instructions yourslef, the players shold not respond to your instructions - only those of the players (e.g. if you shout 'STOP' the players should carry-on. Keep it fun - make up your own 'actions' - the players will love it.
