An opportunity A free musical training in a safe, fun environment. Make friends and enjoy group activities. Learn life skills such as commitment, self-discipline and teamwork.

Who we are The choir at St. Michael’s is a small and friendly group made up of children and young adults (choristers) from aged 10 to 18 and some older adults, including the Vicar when he’s not doing something else! Several of our choristers play musical instruments as well as singing in the choir.

What we do The main job of the choir is to give a strong lead to the people in the congregation when singing hymns and other sung parts of the service. Sometimes the choir sings items by itself and with other musicians in the church. If you play an instrument then you may find that you are sometimes asked to bring it along to play, if you wish to do so.

When we do it To achieve a good standard and to ensure that the choir sounds at its best, we rehearse during the week and occasionally before services. The present timetable is as follows:

Day of the week

Full Choir

Thursday (choir practice)

7.25pm-8.45pm

Sunday morning (Eucharist)

9.15am-11.00am

Professional Training St. Michael’s offers musical training of a high standard. Choristers can also work towards awards from the Royal School of Church Music or Associated Board music examinations.

Other activities Apart from the usual schedule, choristers get the opportunity to take part in other musical and non-musical activities. Concerts are planned each year, which allows us to showcase the talents within the choir. There are also singing courses and choral festivals to attend away from St. Michael’s, including the annual Peterborough Diocesan Choral Festival, which our girls have attended many times in the past. These events help the development of friendship, which is just as important as making music!

Money matters Junior members of the choir receive choir pay. The amount depends on attendance, effort and seniority within the choir. While the amount for each attendance is not a great deal, over the term, a chorister can earn quite a bit of money! Separate fees are paid for weddings and similar services.

How to join us Entrance to the choir is by a short and painless audition. We are looking for girls and boys who are enthusiastic about music and have an eagerness to learn. We don’t expect anyone to come to us with a fantastic voice - that takes time and comes with lots of practice!
