electrical machines, he also has considerable experience of rail vehicle

construction and all types of electrical equipment related to rail vehicles

WORK HISTORY

July 2004 to present Principal Electrical Engineer and Director

Lynx Engineering Consultants Ltd.

Responsibilities:

· Design and consultancy including training and audits

· Investigation of equipment failures

· Design of vehicle modifications

· Management of major modification programs

· Management of overhaul and refurbishment programs

· Assessment of Engineers on behalf of one of the UK rail industry’s governing bodies.

Achievements:

· Introduced a new supplier to the Traction Machine repair and overhaul market. Responsibilities included, assessment of skills and equipment to be acquired, staff training, audits and advice.

· Produced a comprehensive suite of documents enabling vehicle  owners to manage electrical safety on a diverse range of rail vehicles. This included qualitative risk assessments and maintenance instructions

· Developed and obtained approval for a wireless camera system to enable live monitoring of underframe equipment including traction motor commutation.

· Performed Role of Project Engineer for modification program fitting wireless internet access on a fleet of multiple units.

Responsibilities:

· Design and consultancy work including training and audits

· Deputy Electrical Engineering Manager, responsible for staff assessments, budgets, workload and quality for a team of 17 professional Engineers.

· Leading diverse teams of Engineers for large projects to ensure solutions offered to clients are accurate, reliable and cost effective

             Incident investigation

             Improvements in vehicle safety and reliability

             Reduction of maintenance costs

             Overhaul and refurbishment

             Design scrutiny leading to vehicle certification

Achievements:

· Project Engineer for the refurbishment and modification of a large

             fleet of Electrical Multiple Units The disciplines under his direct

             control included electrical and mechanical design, reliability and risk

             assessment, approval and certification The project resulted in an

             improved passenger environment and a more reliable fleet of

             vehicles.

· Successfully led a team of Engineers investigating fitment of ERTMS

             to a range of UK rail vehicles to establish common problem areas

· On numerous occasions successfully located the cause of unusual

             vehicle faults and provided solutions.

1987 – 1994 Senior Electrical Engineer (Machines) British Rail

Responsibilities:

· Led a flexible team providing comprehensive Electrical Machines

             maintenance support. Including investigating problems, provision of

             documents for use at BR Depots and Contractors, approving

             contractors on the basis of their technical competence and quality

             and assisting buyers in negotiating contracts.

Achievements:

· Played a leading role in the development of British Rail’s

             commercialisation of machine maintenance.

· Personally responsible for the design of a "standard" insulation

             system used on the rewind and re-insulation of traction machines.

             The materials and systems developed were in use virtually

             unchanged several years later.

 

1975 – 1987

Roland joined BR in 1975. He held a number of positions related to

reliability and maintenance of locomotives and passenger vehicles,

providing technical support to BR Workshops, Contractors and Depots.
