Traveling to Morocco

From the UK, the easiest way to Chefchaouen is to fly to Tangier or Fez Airports.  At the moment, there are two flights direct from the UK (Heathrow). One by Atlas-Blue, twice a week and leaves in the afternoon, but their website is unpredictable! The other is by Iberia; this leaves London (Heathrow) at 6.20am and arrives in Tangier via Madrid for around £180 return, everyday.

Ryanair also do flights from Frankfurt (Hahn), Barcelona (Girona) and Marseille (MRS) To Fez Airport with connections from the UK and Ireland.

Easyjet fly from Madrid to Tangier everyday.

Atlas-Blue flies to Tangier from Barcelona (BCN), Madrid, Brussels, Paris CG and Marseille twice a week and other flights to Fes.

While Jetairfly fly from Brussels to Tangier. This always seems to be good for UK connections.

Another airline on the up is Jet4u; they fly from Paris (Orly) to Fes.

The flights into Morocco are always increasing and are opening from all over Europe (Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy…).  Therefore, all the information here will be constantly changing. If you can’t find flights to suit your holiday, send us an email with dates and the airports you can make, and we will have a look.

Once in Morocco, you can get from Fez to Chefchaouen on a comfortable, air-conditioned bus for around 70dh per person. Ask a taxi to take you the CTM office (150dh) for tickets and buses are frequent. Alternatively, you can take advantage of our Private Pick-Up Service and you will be brought straight to our Guesthouse.

From Tangier, it is exactly the same. Ask a taxi to take you to the CTM office and take the bus to Chefchaouen (it then continues to Fes).

The Alternative Route.

Another option is to get a cheap flight to Malaga (sometimes as low as £10!), then a bus to Algerciras. At this point you can decide to take the ferry to Ceuta (a Spanish enclave) or Tangier.

If you choose Tangier It’s like Fez as buses and taxis come straight to Chaouen.

Although Ceuta is physically closer to Chaouen there is no direct bus or taxi service. If you have your own car, this is the cheapest option. But remember you still have to enter Morocco via a chaotic and congested customs post. This sometimes costs you the time saved by the shorter ferry crossing.

Basically, Tangier, although slightly more expensive, is the easiest and most stress-free way to enter Morocco from Spain. The views form the ferry as you arrive in Tangier make it worthwhile!

Traveling in Morocco

BY BUS…

Although not well advertised, Morocco has a very cheap and efficient intercity bus service.

If arriving from the south (Fes, Meknes, etc), most buses going North to Tetouan or Tangier will pass through Chefchaouen.

If arriving from the north (Tetouan, Tangiers, etc), it’s the same story…

BY GRAND TAXI…

Grand Taxi’s are used by everyone in Morocco; they are reasonably cheap and prompt. Depending on where you are coming from, you may need to change taxis. This shouldn’t be any problem as the vast majority of drivers are extremely helpful.

We can arrange a Grand Taxi or 12 seater minibus to and from anywhere in Morocco; check out our Private Pick-Up Service page for details.

BY CAR…

Hire cars in Morocco are fairly expensive by Europe standards. But it does enable you to see a lot more of the hidden beauties of Morocco and makes getting here very easy. Most hire companies will have your car waiting at the airport for you and have online booking.
