Who we are
James FlemingBSc (Hons) Physiotherapy MCSP & SRP
James qualified as a physiotherapist from Wits University in 1994 and then spent 4 years working with Greg MacKenzie at Kings Park Sports Medicine Centre in Durban, South Africa. He worked predominantly with musculoskeletal and sports injuries focussing mainly on road running and rugby. James was the physio for the Natal u21’s and Wildebeest and assisted the Sharks in their Currie Cup campaigns between 1995-98. He also toured Ireland with the Natal Duikers in 1995, Wales with the Natal u21’s in 1996 and Australia with the Natal 7’s in 1997.
James then relocated to London after spending a winter working as a ski-guide in Saalbach, Austria. He spent 2 years working in private practice in London and 2 seasons with London Irish rugby club. He set up his own private practice in Putney in June 2002. On June 1st 2004 he joined forces with Nicola Durrant to start PhysioSW19.
James’ interests include sports and the outdoors. He is a member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine. Besides his 6 seasons of working with pro rugby teams, he coached Bank of England rugby club in London in 2002/3. He has also completed 25 marathons including 5 Comrades and 2 London Marathons where he raised money for endangered African wildlife. And then of course there’s skiing...
Nicola Schie MSc (sports and exercise) Physiotherapy BSc(Hons) MCSP HPC Registered Physiotherapist
Nicola graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2000. She started off her career in Johannesburg where she worked mainly in private practice seeing a variety of conditions ranging from musculoskeletal, paediatrics and orthopaedics to acute hospital work. More recently Nicola has worked at the Rosebank Centre of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics. Here she worked with both elite and amateur athletes.
Nicola has her Masters in sports and exercise physiotherapy. Her special interests lie in the rehabilitation of all sports and musculoskeletal injuries. Nicola also has experience and an interest in sports injuries in children.
Nicola participates in triathlons, netball, swimming, cycling and running.
Melanie BryantBSc (Hons) Physiotherapy MCSP & SRP
Melanie hails from Bedfordview in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she attended St. Andrews girls school.
She then moved on to the University of the Witwatersrand to Physiotherapy and graduated in 2000.
After qualifying, she worked in private practice at Roseacres Clinic doing both in- and out-patient treatment.
Melanie moved to the UK in May 2001 and worked in private hospitals in both Reading and Guildford, specialising mainly in orthopaedics
and back and neck pain.
She then worked in a private practice in Esher and worked at Esher Rugby Club from 2003-2006 doing both pitch side
management and ongoing rehabilitation.
Mel joined PhysioSW19 in March 2006 focusing on sports injuries, core stability training and Pilates.
She also specialises in treating pregnancy related conditions, including pregnancy acupuncture.
She is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. Mel’s interests lie in hockey, tennis,
gym, golf and skiing.
Parys Edwards BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy MCSP & SRP
Parys was brought up in Marondera and Harare, Zimbabwe, and attended Watershed College and Chisipite girls school.
She then moved down to South Africa where she studied a BSc. at Rhodes University (1995-1997) followed by Physiotherapy at Wits in Johannesburg.
After graduating in 2000, Parys spent a year working in private practice in Honeydew, before relocating to the UK to pursue her working and sporting careers.
She worked in the Derby Sports Injury clinic and represented Leicester hockey club in the English premiership before retiring at the end of the 2006/07 season.
Parys then headed south to London to join the PhysioSW19 team and now works in both the Wimbledon and Putney clinics.
Her particuar area of interest is sports injuries. Parys has also represented the South African under 21 side at the junior world hockey champs in Korea in 1997 and
both Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal provinces and been a member of the South African womens hockey squad for five seasons.
Parys has taken up triathlon and been selected to represent the Great Britain age group team at the Vancouver triathlon world champs in June 2008.
Ben Willis BHSc(physio), PGDip(sportsmed) MCSP, HPC, MNZSP
After attending King’s College in Auckland (NZ),
Ben moved on to Aukland University where he graduated in Physiotherapy in 1998. He then worked in private practice in Hamilton
while playing rugby for the Chiefs Super 12 team and Waikato NPC team (1999-2000).
Since moving to Europe in 2001 to play professional rugby, Ben has represented Grenoble and Beziers in France,
Leinster province in Ireland and both Harlequins and London Irish Clubs in England.
During this time, Ben worked part time as a physiotherapist and completed a post graduate
diploma in sports medicine through Otago University.
On hanging up his boots in May 2007, Ben joined the PhysioSW19 team.
His interests are in treating elite sports people and in particular neck dysfunctions.
Dr Chris Penter
Dr Chris Penter has a Master’s Degree in chiropractic as well as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician Degree.
He graduated as a chiropractor in 1994, and went on to set up a very successful headache clinic in Durban as he did his
Master’s thesis on headaches. Here he worked side by side with medical doctors and consultants.
He then qualified with a CCSP in 1997, and proceeded to look after high profile elite athletes and rugby players.
In all this time, he also lectured in the field of headaches and cervical spine disorders.
In 2001, he came out to the UK to lecture medicine at the University of Surrey in Guildford. He continues to practice
privately, and has three other clinics in London and one in Guildford.
Dr Penter is married to Anel and has two children.
Lucy Masters LSSM (Dip), MSMA, BA (Hons)
Lucy graduated in Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of the West of England, Bristol in 1997. She subsequently moved into the IT industry where she was a software developer. Given her lifelong passion for sport, however, she decided to pursue this on a vocational level and completed a diploma in Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy at the London School of Sports Massage. Lucy has been practising full time ever since and has worked with international rugby players and elite athletes at clubs including Saracens RFC and Thames Valley Harriers, as well as at various physiotherapy clinics. Her work includes pre/post event massages, assisting in the rehabilitation process for injuries and general massage for tension relief.
She is a member of the Sports Massage Association and attends a variety of Continued Professional Development courses to broaden her skills.
Lucy is a very keen hockey player who captained the Somerset county team for two years and was a member of the West of England squad. Currently, she plays for Merton Hockey Club.
Cheryl Aitken BSc (Diet) P.G.Dip. Diet
Cheryl completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and went on to complete her Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics both at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. At postgraduate level she is now completing a diploma in Sports Nutrition through the Australian Correspondence School.
Cheryl is a member of the British Dietetic Association as well as a number of specialist interest groups. She has a keen interest in sports nutrition, weight management and pre pregnancy and pregnancy nutrition. Outside practicing dietetics, Cheryl’s interests include running, golf and cookery.
Engelie Brand BA Hons (Psychology) UP M.Sc. (Medical Applied Psychology) UP Certificate of Equivalence to MA (Clinical Psychology) UP
Engelie keeps a double qualification as both clinical psychologist and hypnotherapist,
and is registered as such with the Health Professions Council of SA,
the SA Society for Clinical Hypnosis as well as the British Society for Clinical Hypnosis.
She is also a master Human Modeling therapist.
Her special interests include Optimum Personality development, the mind-body link in psychosomatic processes and also the therapeutic use of creativity and imagination.
Nowadays in general psychotherapy practice, she treats patients of all ages, mostly suffering from depression,
anxiety and relationship difficulties.
Her expertise in Hypnotherapy is often used to enhance the effectiveness of conventional modalities of psychotherapy.
Cheryl Torr
Cheryl comes from Durban, South Africa where she worked with James at Kings Park Sports Medicine Centre prior to relocating to London in 1999.
She has been a practice manager in medical practices since 1993.
She is a keen sports woman with particular interest in running and triathlon, having complete 3 x Iron Man,
17 x Comrades Marathon and 10 x 100 milers.
Mizpah Nance
Mizpah comes from Australia, and has lived in Brisbane for most of her life,
although has had a few short stints out of the sunny town.
She lived in the north of Queensland in Townsville for a year in 1997 and spent 2 years in France while her father,
Steve Nance coached the Montferrand rugby club.
After completing her schooling at St. Aidans Anglican Girls School in Brisbane, Mizpah took 2007 off to live and work in London and
will be returning to Australia where she plans to study Medicine in 2008.
She enjoys spending time with her friends and family and has made the most of the opportunities she has had to
travel while living in London.
Carmen Chadband
Carmen joined PhysioSW19 in August 2007 having arrived in the UK in November 2006.
She is oiginally from Durban,South Africa, but finished her schooling in Johannesburg.
Carmen was a competative ice skater,as well as tennis player, swimmer and athlete.
She is keen to work and travel whilst in London and has already enjoyed a holiday to America.
