Background |
The Pembridge
Ward was originally represented by six elected members. When the previous
separate Boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea were combined in 1964, it
originally covered what is approximately now Pembridge Ward and Colville
Ward. As a result of re-warding in 1974 the Pembridge Ward was reduced in
size and has three elected councillors. |
| |
David Campion
and Doreen Weatherhead were first elected to the Council as Conservative
Councillors in 1964 and served in that capacity until the Borough Council
Election in 1971 when the electors of the Ward, in their wisdom, decided
to give the seats to the Labour Party. During the period 1971-74 David
Campion and Doreen Weatherhead both served on Council Committees as
co-opted members. |
| |
David Campion
and Doreen Weatherhead were re-elected as councillors in 1974, when the
Ward was reduced in size to cover the present boundaries, and have served
continuously since then. |
| |
Barbara
Campbell was first elected as a councillor for the Ward in 1990 and has
also served continuously since then.. |
| Boundaries |
The present
Ward is bounded by Notting Hill Gate to the South, Ladbroke Grove to the
West, Ladbroke Gardens and Westbourne Grove to the North and Chepstow
Place and Ossington Street to the East. Under the current Borough
re-warding proposals there will be no change to these boundaries. |
| Portobello Road |
While
Portobello Road stretches North from Pembridge Road the Portobello Market
does not officially start until its junction with Westbourne Grove in the
adjacent Colville Ward. While there are a number of antique and other
shops in the section of Portobello Road, between Chepstow Villas and
Westbourne Grove, this is not officially part of the Market Area. |
| Re-Warding 2001 |
While many of the Wards in
the Borough will change, as part of the process of making all Wards
3-Councillor ones, Pembridge Ward was not affected as it has long had
three Councillors to represent its residents; the geographical Ward
boundaries also remain as they are at present. |
