The Direct Carving Method

Until the beginning of the twentieth century the artist and the stone carver were very different people.

The artist would make a model, probably in clay, and the craftsman copy it in stone.

Therefore, the artist often had little awareness of the natural qualities and potential of the stone.

Gill, Epstein, Hepworth and Henry Moore changed that by taking the stone and seeing what sculpture it would reveal.

Working with it and letting its strengths, weaknesses and beauty excite them.

Learning from the stone.

Learning from the stone

For some, the creating of modern sculpture is a form of self-development, more important than the finished work.

The philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, however, is that the quality of the work reflects in the quality of life for both the craftsman and the community.

Work, including stone carving, can also be seen as a form of worship and so, as we learn new skills we should celebrate.

(Hence the cider and chocolate cake!)

Chris Pellett

Chris has over thirty years experience as a sculptor and stone carver, his portfolio includes work at the Royal Pavilion and the Houses of Parliament.

Based at East Hoathly, all aspects of stone and decorative marble work are undertaken.

Particular satisfaction comes from carving reproduction chimneypieces, traditional churchyard memorials and centrepiece sculptures.

His artistic understanding and stonemasonry expertise will encourage students to quickly develop their skills and abilities with surprising and pleasing results.

The Stone

Traditional English carving limestone such as Hornton, Guiting and Bath will be available in a selection of various shapes and sizes to suit your particular project at approximately £25 per cubic foot.

The Tools

A wide range of stone working tools will be demonstrated, available and used: Square, compasses, mallet, stoning hammer, pitcher, punch, claw, boaster, drafting chisel, carving chisels, scribe, drags, shiftstock, rifflers and glue.

Safety Equipment

Safety glasses and particle dust masks will be provided. Stout shoes are required. Traditionally stonemasons wore leather aprons, (although for two days it isn’t really necessary,) and especially on the continent, a paper hat!
