AS
PART OF ITS £5M PUBLIC ART PROJECT |
The
VIDEO WATERWALL and The ECO HALO |
| Dante Leonelli was also displaying four aspects of previously completed projects and a possible future proposal for the MiIlenniurn dome. |
| Although these previous commissions were realised, they were initially considered impossible proposals, at least in a technical or engineering sense - Leonelli has always been at the innovative and cutting-edge of kinetic light sculpture. From his years of heading the first Fourth Dimensional Studies area at Hornsey College of Art arid Middlesex University, he headed the Piastics Research Unit at the Royal College of Art, forming the Continuum Group with Janz and McKinnon and co-ordinated an extensive exhibition tour of innovative light work, sponsored by the Arts Council, and culminating with the first major exhibition of kinetic Light Art at the Hayward Gallery, London |
| Leonelli's
work over the years is essentially concerned with his
growing interest with the inter-active and environmental
aspects of his work - He often employs advanced
technologies to deal with the varying complex elements of
nature, meteorological conditions, pollution levels, etc.
Paradoxicailly, the various vehicles of art, Halos, Domes, etc, he uses to comrnunicate this awareness are deceptively simple with complex implications. |
| How information is presented to people in a public context is also one of Leonelli's growing interests. The Video Waterwall functions as a fun local notice board, a vehicle for conveying watery "sound bites" of visual information, invited video artists, etc. The success or failure of the Video Waterwall will obviously depend on maintaining the quality and quantity of its programming, especially in relation to its considerable potential to generate advertising revenue. The Eco Halo is intended to function as a thermometer warning of the level of atmospheric pollution along what is a very busy traffic artery into and out of Central London. |
| Leonelli was chosen by Piers Gough as joint co-ordinator of our £5m Public Art Project and was thus substantially involved with advising NHIG on the 16 selected artists. |
DANTE
LEONELLI MADE A SPECIAL APPEARANCE AT "NOW SHOWING" |
| Postscript: London Electricity has kindly made a £5,000 donation towards the cost of the Eco Halo project which has been used to cover the cost for submitting a planning application tio the Council. |
|
| The Eco Halo is shown
situated over the junction of Notting Hill Gate and
Pembridge Road. The Halo would change colour depending on
the criteria being measured, for example, air pollution
or noise. [The computer-generated image has been supplied by Professor Dante Leonelli who holds the copyright of it] |
