Carnival Elephant

Nadim Karam is a celebrated artist of international renown whose work has been exhibited and much admired in Japan (Nakomeguro, Tokyo), Paris, Prague (Manes Bridge), Kabul, Korea, Berlin, Washington and, particularly, Beirut. Here and elsewhere his gigantic pre-archaic, mysterious, humorous and timeless figures have enthralled and enriched the lives of his worldwide congregation.
Nadim’s fascination with Notting Hill caught fire after a full viewing of the Notting Hill Carnival in 1997. He is a prominent member of the 17-artist group selected, after much consultation, for our Public Art Project (funded by the Arts Council) and co-ordinated by Piers Gough. Two of his Carnival Figures now enrich the bleak roofline above Waterstones. This Carnival Elephant follows (or leads) his concept of an Archaic Procession that has been (and always will be) on the move, evoking the timeless movement of people so exemplified by his own home, Beirut - a crossroads of races and fair twin for Notting Hill.
