Graphic Cards
We
generally find that you will either have a very keen
interest in graphic cards or not, totally depending on what you
want you computer system to do, if your looking for a
system that is just for internet surfing and general
office type applications you won't have a need for a
graphic card other than either a low end graphic card to
compliment the type of motherboard you have installed or in some cases motherboards come with integrated graphic
cards on board that will meet your needs
However if
you are looking for a graphic card to enhance your
gaming experience or provide you with a multiple screen
environment and your looking for the holy grail of frame
rates a graphic card will be the most expensive
part of your computer system
Generally
there a three types of chipsets used on graphic cards
- ATi, Nvidia and Matrox high end gaming cards can cost up
to and exceed £500 in some instances depending on your
motherboard you can potentially install three of these
cards in to your system
We have
found over time that Nvidia graphic cards work well with
Intel processors, and ATi graphic cards seem to favour
AMD processors and since the latter have joined forces
and have become ati.amd.com this doesn't surprise us
In short it
is worth spending some time researching your choice of
graphic card - as a bad choice could prove to be
somewhat costly
Here are
some examples of products we both use and recommend:
Prices Range
from £ 25.99 - £500.00 +

Asus ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI
(PCI-Express)

Advance to ultimate HD gaming with
incredible performance, life-like
graphics and support for Microsoft®
DirectX® 10.1. With dual ATI Radeon™ HD
3870 GPUs working in exquisite
precision, you’re ready to dominate the
battlefield from over one teraFLOPS of
GPU compute power. And thanks to
plug-and-play ATI CrossFireX™
upgradeability, you can scale your
performance to even greater heights. ATI
PowerPlay™ technology first used in ATI
Mobility Radeon™ notebook GPUs has been
built into the ATI Radeon™ 3800 Series
GPU. This exciting break-through
technology delivers further on AMD’s
commitment to reducing the energy
consumption in computing technologies.
The technology is designed to enable
power saving profiles that help reduce
power consumption when the GPU is idle
or in minimal use in comparison to
previous products. This dynamic power
management enables the

GPU to
automatically adjust power between low, medium and high
states. It can alter the engine and memory clocks, as
well as the voltages based on the software application’s
activity level. Connect your PC to your home theater and
start watching HD content from your computer using new
ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 series graphics cards. The ATI
Radeon™ HD 3800 Series is designed to decode and
playback Blu-ray™ and HD DVD formats using dedicated
hardware within the GPU. This technology, known as UVD
or Unified Video Decoding, is part of ATI Avivo™ HD, the
new collection of technologies that are designed to
improve the visual and connectivity capabilities of ATI
Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPUs. UVD offloads the intensive
process of HD video decoding and playback from the CPU
while improving the visual quality. This means you can
get smooth, high quality HD video playback from entry
level PCs or free up the CPU for other tasks while you
enjoy the movie. And with HDCP built into the GPU, the
new cards easily enable playback of protected content.
The ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPU further enhances the
HD entertainment experience by making it easy to make
the connection to a big- screen or home theater system.
With built-in 5.1 surround audio (AC3) pass-through
capabilities, the new GPUs and graphics cards support a
single HDMI connection direct to a compatible TV or
receiver. This single cable carries both the HD video
and 5.1 surround audio for a clean, high definition
connection. Some graphics cards will have an HDMI
connector built in, while others will use a special ATI
Radeon DVI-I to HDMI adapter. These options mean greater
choice and flexibility for consumers when connecting to
PC monitors or home theaters for maximum enjoyment of
full HD 1080p content. New ATI CrossFireX™ multi-GPU
technology takes your gaming experience to the next
level with more scalability, performance and
compatibility. The technology combines the awe-inspiring
capabilities of multiple ATI Radeon™ graphics cards and
an ATI CrossFireX ready motherboard to meet the
hard-core demands of your alternate reality. New ATI
Radeon™ HD graphics cards are designed with an internal
ATI CrossFireX™ Bridge Interconnect system to simplify
installation. Experience stunning visual realism in
today’s demanding 3D games with uncompromising image
quality, especially on HD displays. ATI CrossFireX:

Catering
to users who require a graphics card that can provide
high definition gaming and entertainment experiences for
the PC, ASUS, producer of top notch graphic solutions,
has today unveiled the latest generation of NVIDIA GPUs
- the Dual GeForce 9800 GPUs, in the form of the ASUS
EN9800GX2/G/2DI/1G. This astounding piece of hardware
will provide true-to-life extreme HD gaming and
picture-perfect HD movie playback, and is also the
fastest graphics card available bar-none, with speeds of
up to 50% faster than the GeForce 8800 Ultra.
Furthermore, the integrated SmartDoctor feature will
allow users to overclock the Shader Clock for even
better graphical performances; and the ASUS EN9800GX2
will also come bundled with the hottest DX10 game,
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts. The ASUS
EN9800GX2/G/2DI/1G features a 1GB framebuffer, and
performs 30 to 50% faster across all games than the
previous performance leading GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU
graphic cards. It is also designed for the new PCI
Express 2.0 bus architecture - which offers the highest
data transfer speeds for the most bandwidth-hungry games
and 3D applications; while maintaining |

backwards
compatibility with existing PCI Express motherboards.
The ASUS EN9800GX2/G/2DI/1G enables smooth gameplay at
extreme HD resolutions (up to 2560*1600) with all
available in-game settings turned on to the max. An
integrated HDMI connector also allows users to send both
high-definition video and audio signals to HDTVs via a
single cable - eliminating the clutter of multiple
cables and wires. ASUS' world exclusive technology
provides users with the ability to tweak the Shader
Clock on GPUs with the new SmartDoctor. With this
overclocking utility, users will be able to overclock
the Shader Clock and Engine Clock independently for
astonishing performance boosts without the hassles of
rebooting or re-flashing their BIOS*. |
