Not Just
“Any Old Iron”
A
look at London’s iron railings and Balconies
By
Treve Rosoman
One of London’s many beautiful features is the decorative
iron railings and first floor balconies of countless terrace houses.
Sadly much damage was done by a World War II salvage drive, made even
sadder by the fact the metal was unusable. This talk will look at how
this iron work was made, the difference between wrought and cast iron,
even how they were fitted to the buildings. Also covered will be the
various designs employed by architects as famous as Robert Adam in
Fitzrovia and artists as little known as L N Cottingham in his wonderful
Smith and Founder’s Director of 1824. Indeed, one may see
spearheads, halberds, pineapples, acorns and urns adorning and protecting
houses and gardens all over London.
Treve Rosoman is a member of the Curatorial team responsible for
the London houses of English Heritage; in particular he looks after a
diverse collection of architectural fragments. |
