SUSAN MILAN - FLUTE
Susan Milan was the first woman to be appointed a member and Principal of
the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, beginning an extremely broad career as
an orchestral principal, chamber musician, soloist, teacher and lecturer.
In UK she has performed as soloist and principal with all the major
orchestras and she tours frequently throughout Europe, USA, Australia and
the Far East. She has given numerous UK and world premieres and has
inspired many contemporary composers to write for her, among them Richard
Rodney Bennett, Robert Simpson, Antal Dorati, Jindrich Feld, Edwin
Roxburgh and Robert Saxton. She is often heard on the BBC and records
primarily for the Chandos label. A professor and Fellow at the Royal
College of music, Susan is a dedicated teacher and gives an annual master
class course at Charterhouse School, Surrey. She has researched 19th
century flute repertoire for the publishers Boosey & Hawkes and is
restoring and releasing her collection of historic flute recordings on CD. |

MATTHEW JONES - VIOLA
Winner of the prize for the most promising British entrant in the 2003
Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Matthew Jones is an
accomplished violist, violinist and composer. Matthew’s recent recital
schedule has included performances in the Purcell Room, St.
Martin-in-the-Fields, Blackheath Halls, the CBSO Centre, Birmingham, the
new Wales Millennium Centre, venues in France and Italy and live on BBC
Radio 3. He has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician and
orchestral leader throughout the world; recent collaborations include
concerts with the London Debussy Trio, the PM Music Ensemble, Ensemble
Modern and numerous appearances with the ‘Live Music Now!’ scheme. He was
the only British musician selected to participate in the 2004 Verbier
Academy and recently won two major prizes at the ‘Julio Cardona’
International Competition for Strings in Portugal. Matthew studied
Mathematics at the Universities of Warwick and Bologna, Italy, graduating
with one of the highest first class marks of his year, before being
awarded a Senior Exhibition to study at the Royal College of Music. He
continues to study privately with Rivka Golani. As a qualified teacher of
the Alexander Technique and Kundalini Yoga, Matthew’s holistic approach to
music-making has led to great demand for his teaching and workshops, which
he runs throughout Europe in English, Italian and French. His extensive
teaching experience includes work at the Royal College of Music, Trinity
College of Music and Berklee School of Music in Boston. |

IEUAN JONES - HARP
Ieuan Jones left the RCM in 1985 with all the awards including Tagore Gold
Medal and the Queen Mother's Rose Bowl for the student who gave the most
credit to the College in that year. Also in the same year he was the
winner at the Royal Over Seas League Competition...the last time for the
harp to win the competition.
Since then, he has toured the world as a solo harpist. He has played in
over 25 countries taking delight in presenting unusual programmes on the
harp. He has recorded many solo,chamber and concerto works. Ieuan is now
Professor of Harp at the Royal College of Music.. |

IAN BROWN - PIANO
Ian Brown is a musician of great versatility whose career embraces chamber
music, solo playing, duo playing and conducting. After beginning his
musical career as a bassoonist, he developed his piano skills at the Royal
College of Music and after graduating, winning the coveted Tagore Gold
Medal, he became pianist in residence at Southampton University. He became
a member of the Nash Ensemble in 1978 and during this long association has
played at all important British music festivals, often performing in newly
commissioned works. He has recorded extensively with them and takes part
in their annual Wigmore Hall series, which explores the musical styles of
different countries. With the Nash Ensemble he has recorded chamber music
repertoire from Haydn to present day. As well as his duo partnership with
Susan Milan, Ian works with artists such as Rostropovitch, Szering, Ricci,
Soderstrom, Lott, Kirschbaum and Pauk. Over the last decade he has
established himself as a fine conductor and regularly works with
orchestras in Britain and abroad. |
