British Tours of the Ensemble
The first tour to the UK took place in autumn 1998. For two months Russian Orthodox Church music was heard in different churches and cathedrals of England, Scotland and Wales. RUSSICUM sang in Bristol Cathedral, Bath Abbey, Winchester Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, St.Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh and numerous local churches. Many new friends were made and the singers went home with memories of much kindness. They received invitations to come back again at nearly every place they performed. The autumn tours have been repeated every year since then and since 1999 there have been short spring tours as well.
History
RUSSICUM is a part of the St. Petersburg Choir Community NEVA Russicum, which was set up in 1992 by Prof. Andrey Ovechkin, Olga Romanovskaya, Robert Shervenikas, Valeri Vinogradov and Boris Kozin (the present director of the choir). The Community now comprises about 40 professional singers with many years of experience as soloists and/or choir conductors. It has no connection whatever with any state authorities or other organizations in Russia. RUSSICUM ensembles are a capella (voice only) groups of five talented soloists from St. Petersburg and Kiev. These groups help each other to promote traditional and contemporary Russian religious songs, as a part of the cultural heritage of Europe, to a broader international public, and their tours in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Scandinavia, USA and the UK have generated a wide circle of friends and supporters. They also assist each other in the planning, preparation and organization of international cultural exchanges and the tours of the particular ensembles. In Russia the choir members sing as soloists in various parishes or work as church choir conductors in the service of the Russian Orthodox church, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in the Nevsky Prospekt of St. Petersburg. At home the preservation of the original traditions of the Russian vocal school as well as the encouragement of young singers in the field of Christian music are the principal goals of the groups. A special concern is to show the continuity of liturgical music from early times to the present day.
Abertillery Orpheus will be entertaining visitors at the

The Foundation was launched regionally in Wales on September 27th 1998 with a 5k run/walk which raised an amazing £16k. On January 17th 1999,a huge party at Planet Hollywood, London, saw the first gathering of children and the beginning of 'TJF Experiences'.
The charity takes it's name from Joshua Cormelius, from Caerphilly, South Wales, who was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Round Cell Tumour of the abdomen, a terminal cancer, in December 1996 and who died on December 4th 1998, After his diagnosis, Joshua had to undergo intensive and aggressive chemotherapy. To offset this,in his 23 months of treatment, he traveled the world - California,New York, Florida, Lapland,Israel and to Eurodisney - living life to the full. An experience the Joshua Foundation endeavours to repeat for others.

A Week of Choirs
at the Playhouse CheltenhamThis is the first ever choral festival staged by Cheltenham Little Theatre and as such is a major departure from its more recognize repertoire of straight plays and comedies. The Playhouse Theatre has been the venue for several performances during Cheltenham's numerous festivals, but as yet Cheltenham does not have a major choral festival. Cheltenham Little Theatre hopes that by starting a festival, it will grow year on year and become internationally recognize and supported. We have already several well-known groups joining us for this festival and others showing interest for next year. The festival will be a mix of music and styles, from church choirs and large choral societies to small ensemble groups, a mix of the old and the new.More information at

Concert to aid the
Educational Memorial Fund for the Children of
Brian Powell. This concert is being given to aid the Memorial Fund set up for the Children of Brian Powell who sadly lost his life while playing Rugby for the club that he so dearly loved.
Brian had given up his playing career two years previously because of a heart murmur having played for a number of first class clubs and had since taken on the role as coach for Blaina RFC
On the day of his death towards the end of last season, Blaina were playing Cefn Forest at their home ground and with ten minutes to go before the end of the game Blaina found themselves short of a hooker, (Brian's old position) and as was typical of the man he went onto the field and completed the game, not to let the side down. At the final whistle he left the field and as he entered the dressing room, collapsed and died! Brian was 34 at the time of his death, he leaves behind his wife Julie and two daughters fourteen and seven.Brian was a quiet and dedicated family man, being well respected within the community having a very promising career as a rugby coach in front of him.

Hospice of the Valleys
Tredegar Hospice of the Marches, as it was originally called, was founded in January 1986 by Dr Richard Lamerton and a nurse, Ruth Fraser. The Hereford Hospice did not offer a home care service so a millionaire offered them the salaries to run one. The initial service area included the forest of Dean, Northern Monmouthshire, Malvern, Herefordshire and Ludlow in Shropshire. They also had forays into Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester. However, while the Gwent part of the work increased enormously the English part languished because GP's saw no need for it. In Gloucestershire a socialist health authority refused to co-operate with a charity. They misappropriated government money for hospice care, setting up a quango of their own to spend it and replaced the Hospice's 24-hour service with 9-to-5 Macmillan Nurses. In Herefordshire the omni-competent self-image of the country GP's saw Hospice as an intrusion into their empire. They appreciated the in-patient St. Michael's Hospice to off-load patients into, but resented the home care service of the Hospice of the Marches. However, in the Welsh Valleys the Hospice was welcomed by GP's and district nurses who referred patients from the first. So in October 1999 the Hospice was renamed Hospice of the Valleys and moved their headquarters to Tredegar where there had been a branch for several years. The Hospice now has salaries from the Health Authority and prescribing rights in the cottage hospitals. It also provides a day care service.

February 23rd 2001
Abertillery Orpheus will be holding a fund raising concert on behalf of Abertillery Amateur Dramatic and Music Society on Friday 23rd February 2001. Supported by guest artiste Hannah Lake. Tickets are available from February 1st at a fixed price of only £4.00 available from any member of the society.
The concert being held at Ebenezer Baptist Church Abertillery will be the first concert for the choir this year. Why not make a date in your diaries and come along and show your support not only for your choir but also for our very good friends in the Operatic Society who have been entertaining the people of Abertillery since 1916.
The choir is giving this concert as an expression of their practicable support for the Abertillery Operatic Society.
Because of of the continuing difficulties over the Metropole Theatre the society has had to move to the Leisure Center for the production of it's shows. Apart from the logistical problems this has involved the Society in some £4000 of extra expense.
Various fund raising activities will now culminate with this concert by the Orpheus.
