"A Grand Charity Concert fit for the BBC"

17th September 2011

An evening which started out as a charity concert was soon gatecrashed by a highly respected chorister of over 50 years service and the presence of the mighty British Broadcasting Company for a forthcoming "Class and Culture" programme.

The Grand Charity Concert presented by the Abertillery and Llanhilleth Community Council at St. Michael's Church Abertillery was an event to raise well deserved funding for the Abertillery branch of the Royal Brtish Legion. The evening was filled with a variety of music and prose and further embellished by the presence of the BBC who filmed the whole event for a forthcoming programme to be presented by the renowned Broadcaster and Journalist Melvyn Bragg (or Lord Bragg as some will know him by).

The evening included music from the Abertillery Orpheus Male Choir, Abertillery Amateur Operatic and Muscial Society, Soprano Bethan Roles, Elocution by Coleen Roles and Flautists Amy and Molly Bradley. The compere for the evening was Father Patrick Colman ably assisted by Organists Lyndon Stephens. Musical Directors Stephen Bard (AOMC), Stephen David (AAOMS) and Accompanists Penny Hughes (AOMC) and Mainen Hutchings (AAOMS).

The evening was a huge success with £840 raised for the Royal British Legion and the Orpheus would like to thank all those who donated and helped raise this generous amount of money.

To cap the evening, the Orpheus honoured one of it's own. Glyn Andrews, a choristor with Abertillery was awarded an Engraved Crystal Flower Vase for his contribution and services to the choir for the past 50 years. Glyn is a highly respected member of the organisation and proves that you're never to old to sing! The award was presented by choir chairman, Colin Holmes.
