| South Kensington Station |
Following a storm of protest, led by this Society, the application for the 143ft high elliptical glass gasometer was withdrawn in early December 2003. We now await a far more modest application from the developers. We are in active consultation with all parties. There is now a changed situation in that the whole of the South Kensington Station site has been listed following application by this Society, the Brompton Association and the Chelsea Society. This affords a substantial level of protection for the existing building while by no means preventing the modest and distinguished solution which this sensitive site of national and international importance requires. London Underground is now developing a planning brief for the site. Meanwhile, the Brompton Association has published an outline solution for the station and its immediate context, which has found general approval. |
| Vicarage Gate Care Home |
The application for change of use was refused by the Council's Planning Services Committee on Tuesday 12th October 2004. Following the dismissal of the Appeal against the Council's decision by the Inspector, in late 2005, the developers issued a S.288 Claim contesting the decision on legal grounds. When the case was heard by the High Court in mid-2006, the judge ruled that the Appeal should be reheard by HM Planning Inspector, the date for which is yet to be set down. |
| AGM 2006 |
Monday 27th March 2006 at Kensington Town
Hall. The Guest Speaker was Malcolm Shirley, Secretary to the Royal Commission on the Great Exhibition of 1851. N.B. The changed venue in 2006 was solely because its normal venue was already booked on the chosen date. |
| Award for the Kensington Society Website |
At the London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies' Media
Awards Ceremony on 15 November 2005 the Society was
awarded the runner up prize for its website (www.kensingtonsociety.org),
which was particularly commended for being "a clean
looking website with straightforward navigation, good use of colour
and a list of events that were up to date." See Certificate "Members should use our website for looking up planning matters - it gets you there more easily than going to the Council's site!" - Michael Bach |
