Newbury - Information

Cloth town from Middle Ages. 19th Century Corn Exchange indicates Newbury's importance as an agricultural centre. Important battles fought during the English Civil War (1643 and 1644). Attractions include museum - located at Newbury Wharf - annual Michaelmas Fair, Newbury Racecourse, Watermill Theatre, Hampstead Park.

Market Day: Thursdays and Saturdays, with a Farmers' Market on 1st Sunday of the month. Post Office, banks, shops.

Thatcham - Information

Situated three miles east of Newbury and 15 miles west of Reading on A4. Trout and coarse fishing on River Kennet. Kennet and Avon Canal flows through 700 acre designated nature conservation park - includes largest area of inland reeds in the south of England. Attractions include Nature Discovery Centre at Lower Way, annual arts festival and town carnival.

Early Closing Day: Wednesday. Post Office, banks, shops, railway station.
