We are grateful to the customers who have taken the time to write to us at the Heugh Hotel in Stonehaven with their thanks. Here is a selection of letters we have received recently:
I had to write and tell you how enjoyable everyone found my Mother and Father's golden wedding celebration at the Heugh on Saturday. The room was beautifully set out and the buffet was excellent.

From "The Evening Express" :
A PERFECT SPOT FOR ROMANCE
Every so often it's good to throw caution to the wind and have a midweek treat. Never mind heating up a pizza or boiling some pasta, lets just eat out somewhere. So with my other half and our kids in tow, we headed off for early supper at the Heugh Hotel.
And it didn't take us too long to realise we'd made a bit of a mistake because this is the sort of special, relaxed, dare I say, romantic didning experience we wished we had kept back for a weekend when it was just the two of us.
From the castle-like [well, okay, hunting lodge] exterior to the elegant and airy dining room, the Huegh made us feel like kicking off our shoes and settling in for the night. You know the drill...good food, fine wine and a wee nightcap in a wood-pannelled snug before turning in.
Not that the kids weren't welcome, far from it. A colouring book and crayons were produced for my beloved's wee girl, while my 11 year old was told he could have half portions from the main menu if he wanted. In the end they both settled on tasty breaded chicken and chips from the kids' menu. This was light years away fromt he stodge of chicken nuggets. It looked delicious.
Meanwhile, we grown-ups stepped out a little, opting for starters AND main courses. My other half was delighted with the chef's duck liver pate. A rich and creamy affair, it was lifted by a tangy chutney. I had decided to try out the Stonehaven Smoked Fish Soup, a local take on Cullen Skink. It was marvellous. Tender pieces of tasty fish in a creamy broth, supported by tastie tatties and fine pieces of bacon. It was almost a meal on it's own.
Not that that stopped me from getting stuck into my Highland Venison Casserole when it arrived. But not too quickly, mind. This was a dish to savour. The game was tender to the point of melting as it hit the tongue. It came in a rich sauce that had me making involuntary "mmm-ing" noises. As a stroke of genius, the dish came with braised red cabbage, a sweet, vinegary affair that aided and abetted the richness of the venison. Even the creamed potatoes were a delight, shot through with chive.
Mind you, if I thought mine was good, I hadn't reckoned on my other half's choice. Salad as a treat? Well it is when it's Warm Salad of Chicken, Bacon and Mushroom. I had a hard time persuading her to part with any for me to sample, but I'm glad I persevered. The chicken was delicious, the bacon superb and the mushrooms among the freshest I have ever tried. You could almost imagine they had been picked from the nearby Dunnottar Woods. They were full of flavour and so very more-ish. But the twist to this salad was the plum soy sauce that gave everything just a hint of the Orient. And there was masses of it too.
By this time we had decided to sit back and relax and finish our carafe of yummy house red. The littlest member of our diding party had gone outside to bounce on the bouncy lawn outside and run round the sun dail. My loon was happy just to sit and say how much he enjoyed the whole meal. Bonus.
As we headed off, my beloved's wee girl asked when we would be going back to "the castle". Soon is the answer...as soon as we can arrange sitters so we can go and have that grown up evening we promised ourselves.
