Health is another reason why we wanted to do an
eco-refurbishment. While we don’t suffer from any health problems ourselves, we
are keen to prevent any future problems. The two most relevant health aspects
of the refurbishment are the wall-radiant heating system (in combination with
the insulation) and environmentally
friendly paints and oils:
1. Because the wall-radiant
heating system uses pipes running through large surfaces
in the walls, it requires only a lower water temperature than conventional
heating systems (around 40 C in contrast to 60 C). As a result of this the air
in the room moves much less. People with respiratory problems (e.g. asthma,
house dust allergy) can feel the benefits right away.
2. Using eco-paint indoors gave us peace of mind, especially as we were
expecting a baby. We used BIOFA
eco-paint for the walls, and BIOFA satin paint for glossing wooden railings and
doors, and BIOFA colour oil and hard oil for treating the wooden floors.
Eco-paint is relatively expensive, but take a sniff and you know the difference.
