Transport and Getting out and about
Availability varies from area to area. Information on what is available in your area can be found at the local library, tourist information centres and from DCA Head Office
Community Transport Schemes are provided for people who cannot use public transport for a particular journey. Transport can be provided for essential journeys such as visits to hospital or the doctor, and sometimes to the shops, hairdressers and personal visits, etc.
Community Transport Derbyshire provides a supplementary service to that already provided by mainstream operators.
Community car schemes are administered through some volunteer bureaux using volunteer drivers with their own cars.
Some taxi firms have cars that accommodate wheelchairs and disabled people.
Shopmobility Schemes - These schemes will offer free loan of a wheelchair or powered scooter for use in shopping centres or town centres. Some individual shops and other places have their own equipment for loan to their users and customers.
Derbyshire County Council - Runs a concessionary travel scheme for elderly and disabled persons, and also publish a "Going Places" booklet which gives comprehensive details of transport facilities for disabled people.
Blue Badge Scheme (formerly Orange Badge Scheme) - This provides exemption from some parking restrictions and charges for people with mobility problems and it Is accessed through Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council.
The British Red Cross may provide an escort service for those travelling alone.

Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living provides an extensive information service for people with disabilities.
The Community Transport Association keeps providers of Community Transport up to date - much of which can be of value to Carers, including legislation and news stories.
Railway Travel with a disabled persons railcard offer cheaper travel to disabled people and their Carers.
Access groups throughout Derbyshire will provide information on access to shops and other buildings. For some areas access guides have been produced.

RADAR operates a national key scheme for accessible toilets.
A Can't Wait Card is operated by the National Association for Colitis and Crohn's disease.
