British Transport Police move learning disability carers to digital age
Learning Disability Carers will soon have their own, easy to use interactive website courtesy of a secondment from The British Transport Police. The site will be user led, with up to date information and advice on a broad range of issues relevant to family carers of people with learning disabilities.
The Learning Disability Partnership Board will use the site to network local meetings and it’s sub group information on Housing, Health, Employment, Safeguarding and Recreational event Listings, whilst online forums will enable LD carers to debate specific issues.
Inspector Philip Milton of BTP will be working with Derbyshire Carers Association to develop the site in partnership with carers. Helen Robinson, CEO of DCA outlined, ‘ We are very grateful to be receiving this specialised support from BTP for a much needed and timely resource. It is a superb example of how co production and partnership working can benefit carers, who work so hard to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities’.
This initiative was taken up by Elected Carers from The Learning Disability Partnership as being crucial for improving inclusion to a wider community of LD carers. Learning Disability Partnership Boards meet in six local areas each month and the website aims to promote its existence to carers who are not aware of it’s work, or how Board members can help and support them.
The website will be available by the summer and will be formally launched at The Melbourne Festival on 15th September 2012. The Festival will host a specially adapted Changing Place facility.
In addition to the website, DCA has received funding from Derbyshire County Council to offer home based I.T training to LD carers on the partnership board. Pam Gill, LD coordinator for DCA added, ‘information based events are held monthly in Ashbourne, Newhall, Belper and Chesterfield for learning disability carers . This website and I. T. training programme will reach even further into our communities. The British Transport Police recognise the importance of local engagement to broaden understanding of learning disability, and improve safeguarding standards. We are very grateful for this partnership opportunity ’

Accident and Emergency grab sheet (Derbyshire version)
The A and E grab sheet is designed to assist people with a learning disability when using either emergency hospital transport (ambulance ) and when they first arrive at hospital in A and E.
The purpose is to provide essential information to the emergency care staff about the person.
The sheet should ideally be completed with the person and kept to hand in case of emergency.
The sheet should be updated when changes occur particularly with regards to medication and current health issues.
EMAS (East Midlands Ambulance Service) have been educated on its use and should know that the presence of the “green sheet” indicates that the person has a learning disability. It is therefore essential that it is copied/ printed onto Green paper. Click here for a copy of the Grab Sheet.

Derbyshire Partnership Board
for People with Learning Disabilities and their Family Carers
Your Local Partnership Board aims to make sure the lives of all people with learning disabilities and their families are improved. Family Carers are elected to sit on the Board to represent other family carers in your local area. There are many other ways family carers can be involved in the work of partnership boards, by attending meetings to observe or participate in the work of sub groups on Health, Employment, Housing and Leisure.
Through Partnership Boards, family carers are given a chance to have a real impact on the quality of services, how they are planned for, purchased, monitored and delivered. It’s an opportunity for the skills and experience carers have to be heard and valued in shaping how services are commissioned and delivered. However, the aim is to improve lives not just services, and the spectrum of work elected family carers do, aims to achieve that.
I work for The Derbyshire Carers Association, and we offer a range of services including training, information and support for carers, respite breaks, free pamper days, emergency planning services, carer’s assessments, trips, events and social occasions. Through DCA I provide support for carers of those with learning disabilities.
We also have a team of Area Officers who aim to help you will feel supported, included, informed and prepared to carry out your role with confidence.
We do this by being on hand to listen and help you make positive change. With DCA you have somewhere to turn to with the concerns which affect you as a carer, or the person you care for.
There are six local partnership boards in Derbyshire, each made of four elected carers and four people with learning disabilities
All of us are here to help you, as well as our team of area officers.
