Prisoners’ Sunday

Catholic parishes across England and Wales will mark Prisoners’ Sunday on 15 November - a day of prayer and action for prisoners, their children and families, prison workers, former offenders, and victims of crime.

We live in a troubled world where it is easy for some to lose hope, and that can be particularly
true for those affected by the reality of crime. The challenge of Prisons Week 2009 is to “hold fast to hope” – a hope that is not just a fanciful optimism but one that is rooted in the Christian hope that the divine spark is in all people, that no-one is beyond redemption and that change does and can take place. Please pray this week for the many people affected by the reality of crime and imprisonment, as we explore what hope can be for all those affected and how people and relationships can be restored.

The Prisons Week Prayer

Lord, you offer freedom to all people.
We pray for those in prison. Break the bonds of fear and isolation that exist.
Support with your love prisoners and their families and friends, prison staff and all who care.
Heal those who have been wounded by the activities of others, especially the victims of crime.
Help us to forgive one another, to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly together with Christ
in His strength and in His Spirit, now and every day. Amen.

St. Wilfrids New Chapel

Thank you to all those whose generosity and support means that our new Secondary School now has a beautiful chapel. Bishop Kieran has consecrated the Altar and blessed the Chapel. Priesthood Enquiry Evening At the Friary Church on Monday 16th November starting at 7pm with an hour of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and followed by a talk , discussion and night prayer. Langley Green Christmas Fayre Our Lady’s and St. Theodore’s Christmas Fayre will be on Friday 4th December. This is your Christmas Fayre and we need your help to make it a success. We need: Bottles for Bottle stall (spirits/wine /beer/soft), New or good as new toys and gifts, Gifts for the tombola. Cakes on the day. NO JUMBLE PLEASE. There will be boxes at the back of both churches. Please be generous. Any offers of help gratefully received – ring Tony 550682.
St. Edward;s - Volunteers required! We would like to provide refreshments (teas, coffees etc) after 11am Mass every week, and therefore need volunteers to make this happen. We need teams of 4 (1 before Mass to get everything ready, and 3 after Mass to serve and tidy up afterwards. The more people we have, the better. Please see Susan, Tina or Tricia after Mass.

Congratulations! - to Deirdre Waddington, architect for the refurbishment of the Friary. Deirdre was Joint Winner of the Downland Prize, Community Section for her work at the Friary. The prize is given by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and celebrates the added value that an architect can bring to a relatively small project. We are delighted that Deirdre's dedication and hard work has been recognised in this way. A copy of the certificate issued can be seen on the notice board.
Lectio Divina If you would like to deepen your understanding of Scripture, come along to Broadfield quiet room on Thursdays at 10.00am .Everybody welcome
Gatwick Detainees Group With the expansion of the Gatwick Detainee Centre this organisation is currently looking for lots of clothing for young(ish) men – tee-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts and tracksuit bottoms. Can you help? Can you hold collections at your school or your church? Samuel Group – Discernment for Young Adults - these are monthly gatherings that support young adults (18-35years) in discerning their vocation. It may be a call to deeper experience of faith, to Christian service or consecrated life. For some men it may be a call to the priesthood. From October there will be groups on Tuesday evenings at the Friary in Crawley and St. Dunstan’s in Woking (7pm – 9.30pm). Contact Fr. Sunday Lunches From Alison “We are looking for 2-3 people to supervise the Sunday lunches for the needy once a month on a rota basis. This includes opening/closing St Bernadette’s /Friary Hall, and co-ordinating with the team on duty. For more information please contact Alison on 409041.”
