4 & 5 July 2009 : National Conference Finals

It might have been mentioned just occasionally before BUT this is just the third season the club has existed.  This weekend we had two teams representing Cottenham in the National Conference Finals.  Each year the top two teams in the final league standings from each age group automatically qualify for the National Conference Finals against the top two teams from the other regions in order to find out who are the 'Club National Champions of England'.  The Minors team qualified due to their fantastic second place in the league.  The Under 11's also qualified but had to go to the play-off's first.  All of the third place teams in their leagues are invited to a Conference Play-Off tournament to fight for the last place in the finals.

And back to that thought, "only our third season.....", and both teams did incredibly well and did Cottenham Roller Hockey Club very proud.  The Minors came third, and the Under 11's came second.  Wow!

Under 11's - 1st HBU, 2nd Cottenham, 3rd Manchester, 4th Cambridge

Under 13's - 1st HBU Vipers, 2nd Kings Lynn, 3rd Cottenham, 4th Manchester

28 June 2009 : Cottenham win EC CUP FINALS!!!!!!

Breaking News - The Minors team successfully won through the KO Cup competition at Burwell on 31 January to earn a place in the end of season EC Cup Final against Kings Lynn.  A hard fought match but Cottenham took control and won 4-1.  This third season of the club's history had already passed all expectations but now has gone into overdrive.  A huge huge well done to the team.  Mike will soon be posting a detailed Match Report once he has recovered from the excitement !!!

Sooooo......  Can this fantastic season possibly get any better ?  Its the National Conference Finals soon.  Can the Minors' and the Under 11's squads make it a truly magical year over the 4 & 5 July weekend ?

7 June 2009 : Under 11's & Minors win through to the National Conference Finals

The Under 11's team went to the NRHA Play-Offs at Soham today to battle for the final place in the National Conference Finals. At the end of the season all of the third place teams in the regional leagues hold a play-off competition join the first and second place teams who all qualify automatically. The first match was against Plymouth and the team cruised to victory winning 8-0. The second match started well getting 3 goals ahead against HBU Pythons, but they fought back in the second half making the tension unbearable. The final score was 3-2 so Cottenham won through into the finals on 4 July.

The Minors team are also going to the National Conference Finals for their league on 5 July - they automatically qualified coming second in the Eastern Counties Divison 1.

Good luck to both teams. Another brilliant adventure for Cottenham Roller Hockey !!!!

10 May 2009 : Inters win the league - Champions !!!!!!

Cottenham A took the wins needed to come top of the Intermediates (Div 2) league on Sunday.  Huge congratulations to the team.

Mike : "It's hard to beleive that 12 months have passed since the final tournament last year when we clinched the Division Two Minors title.  We needed two wins and a draw and although I believed we would be too strong for our opposition we had to make sure we did not slip up.  This has been a truly fantastic season for the team losing just once all season and growing stronger with every tournament.  It has been a total pleasure to have been involved with these players. "

This is another fantastic result after the Minors team had already secured second place in the top division and the Under 11's team have finished an amazing third position in their league.  More results soon from a brilliant season - not bad for a three year old club !!!!

3 May 2009 : Inter Regional Competition

The 2nd to 4th of May Bank Holiday weekend saw an outstanding competition bringing the best players selected from the Eastern, Southern & Northern regions compete at Peterborough.  It is a mark of how strongly and quickly the club is developing to see how many Cottenham Players were selected to represent the Eastern Counties Region.  We had players selected for all of the age bands we play at and above !

Cottenham players were selected to represent the Eastern Counties in the U11s, U13s, U15s, U15 ladies, and U17s teams.

Southern Counties won the U11 and U13 competitions with Eastern Counties coming second, but Eastern Counties dominated winning all of the other age categories - full results can be downloaded here.

A huge well done to all of our players selected : Charlotte Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, Jack Stevens-Lee, Tom Barry, Lucas Pembrey, Rees Parfitt, Nicolas Pembrey, Scott Neville, Fred McCann, James Neville, Matt Stearn, Rebecca Sharpe

1 May 2009 : More Coaching & Referee success

We often have much to celebrate on the rink with our amazing players but lets not forget the invaluable contribution of the parents - the strength of the Coaching, Refereeing, and Team Management are all vital ingredients to a sucessful club.

Congratulations to the following parents on successfully passing their recent exams :-

Referee Level 1 : Peter Fraser

Coaching Level 2 : Mike Neville, Mona Pembrey, Paula Johnson, Ric Parfitt

26 April 2009 : Jubilee Cup

Cottenham put two team forward to the annual Jubilee Cup held at Burwell and Soham over the weekend of 25 & 26 April.  Cottenham fielded two teams in this under 13's tournament.  Ten teams took part, including the eventual winners the amazing CP Ribes from Spain.

Cottenham A did really well to finish 5th in a very strong competition, and Cottenham B had a great day given the amount of players playing well above their age group.  Well done to all of the players.

The final results were :-

28 March 2009 : WOW, WOW, WOW !!!!

Last year the Minors team acheived the impossible - second year in the sport and we were champions of Dvision 2.  Great results at Soham today have secured 2nd place in Division 1 for this season.  In just our third season to be contending for the top division is just fantastic.  Everyone at the club is so proud!

Well done to the team - and well done to Mike who will be shortly posting a thrilling match report from a very proud team manager !

8 March 2009 : Farnham Shield - Cottenham join the Schoolboys

A day trip to Farnham for the 2009 Farnham Shield gave us the opportunity for our first run out at Schoolboys level. For a team consisting of one 12 year old, five 13 year olds and two 14 year olds playing in this under 17s tournament may have seemed all too premature but at Cottenham we are used to be against it.  The standard of our hockey was brilliant and the team felt comfortable at this level, competing on equal terms, battling for everything as if lives depended on it!

Well done to everybody, particularly our two goalkeepers who were both outstanding and endured a day of shots from some players who will shortly move up to senior level.

A very proud and memorable day for Cottenham Roller Hockey !

1  February 2009 : More success for Cottenham in Project 2010

Carlos Amaral recently extended his Project 2010 squad to 16 players including Cottenham Intermediates A captain, James Neville.  Following Cottenham Intermediates A goalkeeper, Matt Stearn, James becomes the first outfield player from our club to be selected.  As September 2010 approaches the 16 in the squad will be reduced to 10 players for the European Championships.  For these players to even reach the squad is a phenomenal acheivement bearing in mind both players are playing in only their 3rd season of hockey.  Good luck to both players for 18 months time.  Congratulations and well done James for joining the squad.

31 January 2009 : Minors A win through to the Final !!!

16 October 2008 : International Friends

It is nice to be able to welcome friends to enjoy our club and our sport.  Katharina, a German exchange student staying with the Parfitt family, joined the Thursday training session.  She had never played before and hadn't even heard of Roller Hockey.  She really enjoyed herself and would like to say thanks to Dave for allowing her to attend the session and also thanks to all the children who were there for making her feel welcome.

12 October 2008 : What a Feast.......

The annual Cottenham Feast Parade was a great success.  Wonderful weather and a lot of hard work from the village to put on a great display.  Cottenham Roller Hockey club yet again made a big noise with our "Rock 'n' Roller Hockey" theme.  The club came third in the overall best float competition - who knows next year we might even beat the WI !!

A big thanks to Travis Perkins for providing the materials to build the 11 foot electric guitar, M.Dickerson Ltd for the loan of their lorry, and of course Richard for again having to drive the length of Cottenham at two miles an hour listening to our lot singing (er.... trying to sing).

Click here for photo's of the feast.

And while all that was happening...... a huge well done to the Inters Cottenham A team who stormed to 4 out of 4 wins at their first tournament of the year at Soham.  Brilliant !

27 September 2008 : New, young and proud !

You would never have guessed that half the squad were playing in their first ever tournament !  The training definitely works because the Under 11's got off to a great start to their season winning 3 out of their 4 matches.  The final match with Ely was a thriller but the fresher legs of the Ely team playing their third match of the day prevented a clean sweep.  A really big well done to all of the players, especially the new ones who played with such confidence you would have thought they were seasoned pros !

13 September 2008 : Another cracking start to the season !

The Minors have done it again.  Opening the 2008 - 2009 season for Cottenham and their first game in the higher division after winning division 2 last year, the Minors (Div 1) team won two out of their three games at Soham.  Well done !!!

22 June 2008 : A Spectacular End to the Season !!!

The season is over, but what a finale !  Cottenham put its youngest players into the Ivan Cook Trophy competition at the Eastern Counties Finals and Awards day at Bushfields Sports Centre on Sunday 22 June.

Lucas, Charlotte, Nathaniel, Beth and Ben played brilliantly and reached the final – and what an exciting final it turned out to be. Two all at full time against Kings Lynn A, into extra time and sudden death ‘golden goal’.  End to end play through the first half of extra time and through to the final 60 seconds of the second half with penalties looming.  All of a sudden Kings Lynn managed to rush on our goal.  Shot after shot from them, save after save from Nathaniel, seconds to go and Kings Lynn scored.  A deserved win for Kings Lynn, but so much praise for our team to get to the final and get so close.

A big thanks to Mona  for managing the team, a huge well done to all of the players, and especially well done to Beth and Ben playing in their first competition – what a great start for them and what a great finale to a wonderful season for the club.

Well done Cottenham Roller Hockey !
