The CDA Statement on Sugar and Dental Disease

The Commonwealth Dental Association, in response to the WHO consultation on Nutrition and Chronic Disease, issues the following statement on the impact of the consumption of refined carbohydrates including sugars on the prevalence of dental diseases, particularly dental caries. The statement emphasises that it is the frequency of consumption, rather than the amount, which affects caries levels. The limitation of frequent exposure to refined carbohydrates and the use of fluoride in toothpaste are the two most effective measures for the prevention of dental caries.
