Things to Do

There are very many special places to visit and things to do locally, depending on your taste for culture, family activities, history, food and drink, architecture or just quiet country pursuits.

The world famous Shakespeare's Birthplace Museum is just 9 miles away in Stratford-upon-Avon where there are many other touristy things to do. These include visiting the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where you can see a performance or just visit; sitting in the park by the river or taking a pleasure cruise or rowing boat out on the river. There are also three other historic Shakespeare houses in the district.

For children, there are other attractions. Perhaps the best known is Warwick Castle, which is one of the most impressive castles in England. They also have a programme of special events such as ice-skating and a winter fair in the Christmas holiday season and jousting in the Summer.

Also for children is the Cotswold Farm Park and not far away, the pretty town of Bourton-on-the-Water with its Model Village and Birdland.

There is also the natural beauty of the Cotswold Hills. Perhaps the most beautiful of the nearby towns is Chipping Campden.

The nearest village is Ilmington where there is a village store and two excellent pubs: the award-winning Howard Arms and the equally delightful Red Lion. Two miles away lies the sleepy hillside village of Ebrington, with another excellent pub, the Ebrington Arms.

Around the area, there are many country walks with fantastic views, and we can lend you maps to help find your way around.

There is a nice public swimming pool just 2 miles away which is never very crowded.

There is a bike hire company Cotswold Country Cycles 3 miles away.

Calendar of Events

2013

  • Sunday 13th June: Ilmington Open Gardens. Wander through the traditional cotswold gardens of our beautiful village. Imington Manor, The Grange, Foxcote Hill and several other grand houses throw their gardens open for charity. Evocative scents, bubbling streams, traditional orchards and long views characterise this quintessentially English day out.
  • 21st June - 6th July: Shipston Proms Music Festival. Jazz, blues, folk, rock and classical performers are amongst the acts that are appearing at this year's Shipston Proms. The Shipston Proms aims to cater for all tastes and this year will be no different with an eclectic mix of artists, both local performers and world renowned talents.
  • August Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August: the annual Ilmington Show starts at 1.00 pm. A full programme of events includes displays by the Medieval Combat Society, Explosives Detection and Security Dogs demonstration and, hopefully, a low-level flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster bomber. There will also be the usual large selection of sideshows and stalls together with beautiful exhibits from the Horticultural Society.
  • Saturday 14th September: the Ilmington Music Festival, will take place at St. Mary's Church. A programme of classical music will start at 2pm and run until 8pm. There will also be a garden party next door in Berry Orchard. In the evening a jazz quartet takes over and then a disco in the Village Hall.
