'I have never seen so many children enjoying mathematics in the same place at the same time in all my life!'
Dame Wendy Davies - Associate Director - Specialist Schools and Acadamies Trust
'What can you say about this program, it's probably the best maths simulation of its type ever produced'
Janice Staines, Primary Maths Co-ordinator, BECTa
'It's a fun way to learn maths and you get to do it in class!'
Bethan - Aged 10
'Cars' is designed to help encourage students to grasp basic mathematical skills and to use them on a practical level, by involving them in a competitive simulation of a series of Grand Prix races!
It will provide a great deal of fun and excitement and help to raise standards in Mathematics at the same time! 'Cars' is the software used for the Jaguar Cars Maths In Motion Challenge which is sponsored by, amongst others, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.
Participants, working in small groups, are given details of a race track and other information that includes variables such as the number of laps and the weather forcast. They then have to measure and calculate the length of each straight and the angle of each bend. Add to this, driver temperature, maths modelling, estimation, decimals, percentages, scale, ratio, long multiplication and division, strategy and teamwork and you have a maths project that will keep your students engaged and highly motivated for some time! For older students, there are teacher options to include algebra, trigonometry, cumulative frequency graphs, simultaneous equations and volume.
However it should be stressed that this level of difficultiy is entirely up to the teacher to select.
'Cars' in Abu
Dhabi Schools - February 2009
We have just returned from a trip to Abu Dhabi where the
Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, one of our
sponsors, are working with four state secondary schools
on a long term educational project. We were delighted
when the SSAT asked us to get involved and the trip saw
us introducing 'Cars' to nearly 400 students during our
stay. We ran 10 training sessions and two Finals, one
for the boys and one for the girls. The schools taking
part are Al Sarooj School for Girls, Al Zayedia School
for Girls, Al Zayedia School for Boys and Khaled Bin Al
Waleed School for Boys, all of which are in Al Ain. The
students were engaged and very motivated and told us
that they really had enjoyed the experience.
