Background
Byker Bridge Housing Association Skills Training Day Centre has been in operation since 1993. The Centre provides life and social skills training to those who are vulnerable or isolated in the community.
During 2005 the opening hours were cut back from six days to five due to a lack of funding. The Centre is open on Sunday and Monday to Thursday. The opening hours have made the Centre more accessible to potential clients and in particular evening and weekend services provide activities and companionship at times when service users are most likely to be isolated. The Centre has proved a successful project and currently has 110 regular users, daily attendances average 20 to 25 people.
The Centre operates a referral system; service users are referred by Social Workers, Probation Officers, and mental health workers and via other voluntary agencies. Self referrals are also accepted.
| Day to Day Activities |
|
Apart from the structured activities mentioned above, service users at the centre get up to so much more. There is always a member of staff or a volunteer on hand to assist, and motivate individuals to explore different activities, learn, and develop. Individuals are encouraged to have a timetable of how their time at the centre is structured, and this can include the activities above or anything else we can provide. If someone identifies an area of learning he/she would like to explore, we will do whatever we can to facilitate the learning experience.
Service users are also encouraged to get involved with the day to day running of the centre in areas such as: assisting with food preparation, as we provide lunch and afternoon snack and the general cleaning and maintenance of the centre and the “garden” area in the yard. There is a wide range of social and recreational activities provided such as day trips, visit to the theatre and art galleries and swimming. |

As well as life and social skills training, the day centre offers a wide range of projects and activities which compliment the more formal work of the centre.
