News St.George Longbow Tournament 2010 The tournament will be held on Sunday 18th April 2010 at Morley. St.George Longbow Tournament 2009 For once the weather followed what the forecasters had predicted and we were rewarded for our efforts with very pleasant Spring temperatures. I lost count at the number of archers wearing traditional garments. So many in fact that we decided to reward three with golden chocolate rabbits. The Mayors of Morley and Wakefield together with our Lady Paramount presented the trophies and medals. Full results on results page. Our thanks go to Bob Key for keeping the scores, the Bowmen of Adel field party, and the judges Karen Winsett and Pat Lightowler who were accompanied by Candidate Judge Carl Morgan. St.George Longbow Tournament 2008 The Royal Armouries' Golden Arrow was won by Geoff Walker of Selby Archery Club. This broke the three year run of lady winners. ![]() The competition for the Arrow was closely contested, the archers having had to qualify first by being in the top of their class (ladies, gentlemen or juniors) after a day-long two-way Western. The organisers had devised a test of all archery skills for the shoot off for the golden arrow. First they had to shoot at a wand painted with red and white barber-pole stripes set up against a target face. Next they had to shoot at a 3-D pig. And finally they had to shoot through the arrow slit at the knight inside the castle wall. The weather can only be descibed as cold and windy, but the tournament was brightened by a number of archers dressed in traditional costume. The tournament organisers awarded the prize of a pewter cup to Chris Key of Wakefield Archery Club who shot in his half armour narrowly beating Trevor Astley who certainly had the most colourful costume. The Mayor of Morley, Councillor Joyce Sanders awarded the golden arrow to Geoff Walker. He will have his name engraved on a small shield attached to the arrow and on the reverse a skilled engraver from the Armouries will reproduce his club emblem. The arrow is on permanent display at the Royal Armouries in Leeds (in the tournament room). The results were announced by the Honourable Keeper of the Scores- Bob Key. The Mayor and Lady Paramount Mavis Reynolds presented the other trophies and medals. Full results on results page. Our thanks go to the field party, and the judges Karen Winsett and Stephen Howard who were accompanied by Candidate Judge Pat Lightowler.
