David O'C 36-2-282
Keith Topp 36-2-252
Lis O'C 34-1-212
David Aikin 33-0-177
Leo Topp 32-1-173
Although
the weather was not as favourable as in November scores were on the up from
1212 to 1218. David Aikin was using a club trainer bow and arrows. Congratulations
to John Armitage on retaining the Icicle and Leo Topp on retaining the Iciclette.
Aire Valley Christmas Cracker 10th December 2006
Five
BoA longbow archers descended on the Aire Valley's Christmas Cracker on the
basis that if enough of us took part someone should win something.
The usual
suspects were the 3 Davids, Bruce and Lis. The contest was closely fought
throughout the afternoon with the top archers only being separated by 10
points mid-contest. In the end Bruce Knights won by 2 points over well
established longbowman Gorden Aldred from Samlesbury Longbow Archers.
The Cracker was also the second inter-club match in the Airedale League.
Bruce receiving longbow trophy.
GNAS Junior Indoors Meeting 3rd December 2006
At the junior
National indoors held a Lilleshall,
Matt Arnold won his section and became National Boys Indoor Compound Champion
for the second time. Avid readers of Archery UK will have seen that he also
tops the Boys ranking list. Tim Arnold and Helena Beeson from the club also
shot. Thanks to the parents who supported their juniors and especially Ros
Beeson who was keeping the scores for all four sessions.
November Postal & Frostbite results

first postal results of the season can be found on the results page or click here
Annual General Meeting 26th November 2006
The
AGM was held on Sunday. Various awards were made to successful archers. The
prestigious GNAS handicap improvement medals were awarded to Nick and Helena
Beeson. Very few members had shot enough scored rounds to qualify for these
awards and the Secretary encouraged all members to try for the awards next
year, particulary the senior medal which has a particulalarly viscious clasp.
The meeting
decided that membership fees should remain the same and that a family membership
should be introduced. The Secretary introduced the club development plan and invited any comments to him as soon as possible.
Alastair
Cameron was confirmed as Chairman and the committee was pleased to welcome
Robert Finch as an ordinary member. There are still vacancies for public
relations and social secretary. If any member is interested in these positions
please have a word with Nick.
Tuesday evening shoots 21st November 2006
Tuesdays
are getting as popular as the are in the summer with two line ups required.
The longbowmen shot their first indoor challenge for the Woodchip trophy.
Bruce showed how he intended to go on right from the start and by two dozen
was 18 ahead with no sign of relenting. He finished with a score of 433 which
was just to his handicap getting 1441 adjusted; but this was pipped
by David O'Carroll with 1442 (409). In third place was David Hood with adjusted
score of 1403 (379). Lis was the only lady longbow and scored 1360 (300). At the other end of the shooting line the Arnolds were punishing the 3-spots in the wayonly
compound archers can, whilst in the middle of the range more sedate recurve
scores were being notched up by new and more longstanding members.
First BA Frostbite 18th November 2006
The
weather did its best to live up to its name but the sun burnt through the
early morning mist and by 11am the wind had done the rest. The scores were
not the best but still creditable in the windy conditions. The team for the
BA postal was:
John Armitage 36-4-289 who wins the Icicle
David O'Carroll 36-5-274 who didn't
Nick Beeson 36-1-225 who had to give up the Icicle
Keith Topp 36-3-217 who had to leave his sick bed to take part
Phyl Abbott 35-0-207
who felt sick as a Parrot over her last two arrows.
others vying for places in the team were Lis O'Carroll, Harry Daniels and Cedric Abbott.
The Iciclette was contested by Leo, John and James with Leo winning through with 29-6-168 and more golds than the adults.
First Postal 12th November 2006
The
first postal of the season got off to a cracking start today with enough
over 500 scores to fill the A team with some spares for the B team. Bob Key
took the lead with 565 with no-one else left in sight.
First Airedale Longbow inter-club shoot 11th November 2006
The
Adel team swept the first three places of this inaugral shoot between the
Bowmen of Adel, Aire Valley Archers, White Rose and Bronte. The other teams
were left in no doubt that Adel are the team to beat.
David O'Carroll 58-2-401
David Hood 60-6-378
Bruce Knights 60-2-353
Lis O'Carroll 59-4-306
Full results here . The competion will run each month until February 2007.
First Frostbite 28th October 2006
The
first frostbite of the season took place today. Not part of the postal competition,
but the contest to see who has the honour of holding the trophies for the
first month. It was a Titanic struggle, in which James snatched the Iciclette,
and Nick beat off Harry for the Icicle. Perfect Frostbite weather, cool,
dank and muddy - let's hope for more of the same on November 18th and a few
more archers.
Medal winners
The
end of the outdoor season was marked with two more medals for club members
Nick Beeson and David O'Carroll. Nick brought home a GNAS medal for barebow
clout from Harrogate and David a YAA medal for longbow FITA 24 field from
Riggwelter, Otley.
Mexico bound
YAA junior squad member Matt Arnold flew out to Mexico to represent Great Britain on 13th October.
We wish all the junior squad well.
NCAS 5 Counties Match – Seniors – 1st October 2006
Matt joined the winning compound team and shot really well in his first seniors
match. David put in a good score at 100 yards but then trailed off to finish
seventh.

Barnsley Longbow Tournament 23rd September 2006
David Aikin struck gold
on a gold misty day and the sun came for the presentation of the trophy for
most golds. Lis O'Carroll won the trophy for best gold having taken out the
cross before the sherry break. David O'Carroll brought home the worst white
in an end which include four peticoats- and he says he was aiming for gold!!
Lis and David also won the Jack & Jill.
YAA Team selection
Four
BoA members have been selected for the YAA team to shoot at the Inter-Counties
Tournament. On Saturday 30 September Helena Beeson and Tim Arnold are in
the junior recurve team. On Sunday 1st October. Matthew Arnold has secured
a place in the senior compound team and David O'Carroll has been selected
for the longbow team. Good luck to them all!
The Wharfedale Longbow Tournament 10th September 2006
The Archers
of Wharfedale's tournament has been hosted by Adel for over 23 years since
the Wharfedale club folded and is a must form many local longbow archers.
We were pleased to welcome a contingent from Samlesbury Longbow Archers in
Lancashire and three from Bridlington in what is now East Yorkshire. Cedric
was the shooting Field Captain and he was joined on the shooting line by
David Hood, Bruce Knights and Lis and David O'Carroll.
The Ascham 9th September 2006
The
Ascham is the ladies equivalent of the Scorton Arrow and this year was held
at Adel. The archery field was in use by football so Cedric and David A had
to hop over the fence into Bedquilts to set up the targets. The competition
is shot two-ways and is probably the only competiton in which recurve archers
shoot this way. For the first time in many years there were no BoA archers taking part.
Civil Service Nationals 8th September 2006
The 50th
national civil service archery competition was held in Cheltenham on a gloriously
sunny day with only light winds. This suited BoA archers Lis and David O'Carroll
who were able to pull out their best performances of the season, Lis coming
second in the Ladies Longbow and David winning the Gentlemen's longbow. As
this was the 50th competition the awards were made at the end of a celebratory
dinner.
BoA Open Competition 3rd September 2006
The Outdoor
Tournament at Adel took place in typically "testing" conditions. Heavy rain
driven by fierce and swirling cross-winds mingled with bright periods, but
scoring was generally down. Unlike at least one of the assembled tents, which
tried to make a break for the neighbouring garden. Abundant cakes and other
delights were served throughout the day, and a raffle was held in which one
of the most sought-after prizes was a jar of Marmite.
Thanks to all who took part - we hope you enjoyed your annual visit - and to the many members who came to help out.
Northern Counties Clout 3rd September 2006
Three BoA
members tried their luck at the NCAA clout championships which were held
at Harrogate. The wind was very testing but Lis O'Carroll came second in
the Ladies Longbow winning her first NCAS medal.
New Pavilion
The paint
squad have been out in force to transform the Pavilion. It may not be new
but it is sparkling white once again and we have smart green doors. Come
and have a look, and whilst you're there why not do some shooting? It would
be great to see you again. Thanks to Nick, Helena and David O'C for taking up the brushes.
Pomfret 60 2nd September 2006
The
usual suspects managed to make their way to this longbow shoot in the grounds
of Pontefract Castle. Their immediate aim was to dress as quickly as possible
in their waterproofs as the early warnings of the weather forecasters proved
to be wearingly accurate. About half the company unstrung their bows at the
lunch break not to return to the shooting line but those who battled on to the afternoon session were rewarded
with drier but windier conditions.
The star
of the day was Bruce Knights who was awarded a plaque for achieving a five
gold end at 60 yards. He also won the medal for most golds. Lis O'Carroll
won the ladies medal for highest score, best gold at a specified end and
a special prize for being the most cheerful lady. Others taking part were
David Hood, Jamie Hood, David O'Carroll and Phil Scarfe. Full results.
BoA annual championships 28th August 2006
The 2006
Club Outdoor Championships were held on Bank holiday Monday. As usual, the
rounds were York/Hereford/Bristol, with Nationals available for those only
shooting after lunch. Conditions were challenging, with a gusty breeze. The
following took part:-
Alastair Cameron - Gents recurve winner / Gents Best Gold
Harry Daniel - 2nd gents recurve
David Aikin - 3rd gents recurve
David O'Carroll - Gents longbow winner/ 2nd gents handicap/ Worst White
Bruce Knights - 2nd gents Longbow/ 3rd gents handicap
Cedric Abbott - 3rd gents Longbow/ Winner gents handicap
Lis O'Carroll - Winner Ladies longbow / Ladies Best Gold
Helena Beeson - Winner Junior Highest Score / Junior Handicap
James Devlin - 2nd Junior Score / Junior Best Gold
Jonathan Hill - 3rd Junior Score
Nick Beeson started the York round, but needed a nap after lunch
Phyl Abbott and Jean Clarkson shot the National round, but did not do as well handicappally as Lis did.
Scores were lower than usual, with few reaching their handicap level. The
shining exception was Helena, who managed - at last - to break one of the
longest-standing club records, for the Bristol 3, which had been set by Becca
Clift in 1985, years before Helena was born.
Lunch with a barbecue was enjoyed by the happy few attendees enjoying the
finest Ilkley sausages and hot banana with mascapone filling .
New YAA web site launched August 2006
Visit the newly relaunched website at: http://www.yorkshirearchery.co.uk/
Friendly longbow at St.Ives 30th July 2006
Three
BoA longbow archers visited the St.Ives grounds to shoot with the longbowmen
of Aire Valley Archers. The hospitality was great and we all enjoyed the
quirky winds and the sloping field.
The Samlesbury 4 counties longbow tournamnt 29th July 2006
The
morning session was shot through a increasingly warm field but after lunch
a refreshing breeze blew up only spoilt by rain over the last few ends. The
county team championship was won by Yorkshire for the sixth year running-
Colin Hope, Lewis Mitchell, David O'Carroll and Anne Shooter. David also
won the trophy and medal for most golds.
The July longbow challenge 4th July 2006
The
monthly longbow challenge for the Woodchip Trophy was won by Lis O'Carroll
on a beautiful evening shooting a Long National. The adjusted handicap results
were:
Lis O'Carroll 1457
David Hood 1426
Bruce Knights 1420
David O'Carroll 1410
Jamie Hood 1389
The 1834 Longbow Tournament 25th June 2006
The Wakefield Archers put on this new longbow tournament to celebrate the
inaugral meeting of the first archery club in Wakefield. It had been intended
to shoot a double Western but the tournament was curtailed at the end of
two dozen arrows into the second Western round.
Lis came second
in the Ladies longbow with a score of 91-411-6 to Sue Meeds' 100-424-8. Bruce
Knights came third in the Gents with a score of 110-530-15.
St.George AC Westerns Tournament 18th June 2006
The
BoA longbow archers were in evidence again at St.George's, Harrogate. David
O'Carroll was disappointed in his bid to retain the longbow trophy. After
the first distance he had 60 points to make up over four dozen arrows. Not
a completely hopeless case in longbow, but even with 10 golds he was 30 short
at the end of the event to take second place. Joining forces with wife Lis
and David Aikin he had better luck, taking the brand new Longbow Team trophy
which is already on its way to the trophy shop to have Bowmen of Adel, 2006 winners inscribed on it. Lis came second in the Ladies longbow and also won the medal for worst white.
The BLBS Northern Meeting 10th June 2006
The
only BoA entrant was David Aikin this year but he did us all proud by winning
the medal and trophy for most golds. This built on his earlier success in
winning the Eccles Wand meeting on 27th May at Preston with the only
arrow to hit the wand at 80 yards.
The YAA championships 4th June 2006
There
was a small BoA contingent at the county championships representing all three
disciplines. Tim Arnold won in his age groups and David
O'Carroll came second in the longbow.
The Nock 29th May 2006
There was a small but high quality turn out for “The Nock” on the Bank Holiday
Monday. Ten hardy souls braved the promised early downpours – when
a coffee break was suggested after 2 dozen that did the trick, and the sun
shot thereafter, though the clouds loomed again as we tidied up.
Eight archers with handicaps shot a Western, with the results:-

In the competition between the two unhandicapped archers, Jonathan Hill beat
James Devlin to take the Adel Bronze. And the Betty Wells trophy for two
archers of different generations from one family went to the Beesons.
AIUK 27th May 2006
On Saturday May 27th, we played host to a collection of archers linked by
membership of “Archery Interchange UK”. Pete Thurlow was the driving force
behind this, and organised a splendid day. We shot National rounds, and then
one arrow each at the boar. But the highlight was the provision of masses
of cake, which is something of a fetish among board members.

All Change
At the recent Committee meeting, Andy Arnold stood down as Chairman. He was
replaced by Alastair Cameron, who will also act as our representative on
the AWMA.
St.George's Day 23rd April 2006
At the YAA Clout
Championships, Adel acquired two new county Champions - Helena Beeson in
Girls Recurve, and Nick Beeson in Gents' Barebow. Nick achieved a Black tassel
in the process (Helena had achieved her White Tassel in winning the Panda
Clout the previous weekend).
There was good news from the St.George Longbow Tournament at Morley as well. David Hood came tenth (out of 100)
with a score of 82-387-16, Bruce Knights came twentieth with a score of 75-328-6
and David O'Carroll came 29th with 67-289-7. The highlight of the day was
the shoot-off for the Royal Armouries Arrow which involved a wand, a 3-D
pig and a knight behind the castle wall. Watch out for an opportunity to
try out these targets this summer.
We also ran
a very successful Have-a-Go at Morley. Thanks to all those members who helped
with the working party and with the HaG. And a big thanks to Panda who loaned us bosses and stands.
Annual Frostbite 8th April 2006
The annual competition
for retention of the Icicle was won convincingly by John Armitage. It was
the worst shooting weather we had had all winter (and its meant to be Spring
now) so were pleased that this was just a "fun" competition as the scores
were so low that they cannot be recorded for the good name of the club. The
cricketers were out with their paint pots sprucing up the pavillion in between
racing after their new sightscreens.
PANDAMONIUM 2nd April 2006
The morning broke
with beautiful sunshine but by the time we arrived at the mud bath that was
Panda the rain was threatening, foul weather wear was put on and umbrellas
broken out. The shooting was difficult and there were no exceptionally good
scores to be had.Five longbowmen from Adel took part:
David O'Carroll 285
David Hood
267
Bruce Knights
230
Lis O'Carroll
223
David Aikin
180.
Frostbite 25th March 2006
The
weather forecast for the final postal frostbite was not good, but those who
turned up were rewarded with some beautiful sunshine. Though this turned
to a slight Westerly breeze which would not have suited left-handers.
John and David
went head to head. John quickly took the lead and was six ahead at the first
dozen but David lept into the lead with five 10s and a lead of only three.
John was all set to regain his lead but the pressure was too great and a
four at the last end spelt defeat.
The winner of the Iciclette
was: Jonathan 34-0-187 who having nearly doubled his last month's score also
gained a place in the team.
The top scores were:
David O'Carroll 36-6-290
John Armitage 36-2-288
Lis O'Carroll 36-2-233
Jonathan Hill 34-0-187
Richard Brenack 33-0-164
Congratulations to Jonathan on his first appearance in the team.
YAA Indoor Championships 12th March 2006
A good turnout
for the club with four recurve, two longbow and one junior recurve taking
part. There were not many clubs entering more. Medals were sparce with only
David O'Carroll bringing back third place in longbow with a score of 60-9-446
-his best for two years. Others taking part were Helena Beeson, Nick Beeson,
Alastair Cameron, Robert Finch, Lis O'Carroll and Peter Thurlow.
Longbow Frostbite 25th February 2006
A cold wind crept
into every crevice and those who had not wrapped up well had to wait a long
time for the warming glass of mulled wine at the end of the shoot, Jonathan
joined us with the club longbow, and having scores was proclaimed the junior
longbow frostbite champion.
David Hood raced ahead from the start and despite dipping in the last end maintained his hold of the woodchip trophy.
David Hood 32-0-177
David O'Carroll 32-1-140
Jamie Hood 25-1-112
David Aikin 24-1-92
Frostbite 18th February 2006
Had a good turnout on a beautiful if frosty morning.
The winner of the Iciclette was: Jonathan 21-0-98.
The top scores were:
David O'Carroll 36-6-297
John Armitage 36-?-286
Phyl Abbott 36-2-262
David Aikin 35-2-239
Richard Brenack 34-0-210 Congratulations to Richard on his first appearance in the team and Jonathan on his first appearance.
Friendly longbow at Aire Valley 11th February 2006
Five longbow archers from BoA took up the challenge
to shoot a Portsmouth in a friendly competition at Aire Valley Archers and in a very cold
hall managed very well.
David O'Carroll 60-1-397
Bruce Knight
60-3-388
David Hood

Frostbite 28th January 2006
Our
Frostbite recurve team (John Armitage, David O'Carroll, Nick Beeson, Lis
O'Carroll and Helena Beeson) managed to beat Black Lion, whose total included scores
of 310 and 308, by 1 point. Which makes it three wins out of three so far.
The new trophy was won by Helena.
NEW JUNIOR TROPHY
The committee have decide to buy a new trophy for juniors to compete for in the frostbite round alongside
the Icicle and Snowflake. It will be called the Iciclette. The first competition
is Saturday 28th January for the BA postal frostbite.
Wakefield Archers Portsmouth 15th January 2006
The club was
represented by three BoA archers and we had some good results. David O'Carroll
came third in longbow and Alastair Cameron 9th in recurve. Pete Thurlow contented
himself with a win over Bill Brydon from Panda.
January Icicle 14th January 2006
Not a very good
turn out on what was a pleasant and sunny January morning. The grounds were
quiet with only one hockey match to disturb our concentration. John tore
the Icicle from DOC's grasp. Return match in February- all welcome to participate.
1st John Armitage 36-7-292
2nd David O'Carroll 36-5-287
3rd Lis O'Carroll 36-1-195
BoA indoor championships 8th January 2006
BoA held another
successful indoor championships in co-operation with the HASSRA Leeds Archery
Club. The tournament incorporated the Civil Service Yorkshire and Humberside
regional championships.
BoA at Panda Clout 1st January 2006
Panda Bowmen welcomed two BoA archers to their New Year's Day clout. This
was a single clout which was about as much as anyone could manage. Everyone
went home a winner with rosettes specially made for the occasion.
