General Guidelines on Food and Fluids before Operations

Your child's safety depends upon adequate preparation for their anaesthetic, part of this includes appropriate food and fluid intake before surgery. Below are GENERAL guidelines to help you prepare your child. They may need to be varied for specific operations or examinations; if this is the case your surgeon or the ward nurses will inform you.

 

Clear fluids are drinks through which you can look!

 Food                                            Time to stop before the operation

All types of food (including cow's milk)                 Stop 6 hours before the estimated operation time

Breast milk (for newborns and infants)                Stop 4 hours before the estimated operation time

Clear fluids (water, dilute juices)                        Stop 1 hour before the estimated operation time
