Short story “The Tip of the Mind”, first published by Big Finish
Productions in March 2003, ISBN 1-1844350-07-X
I
wrote the original version of this short story for Short Trips: Zodiac, the first Doctor
Who short fiction collection from Big Finish Productions. I submitted a
short proposal for that but, by misreading editor
Jacqueline Rayner’s e-mail reply, I thought she had
commissioned the story. I proceeded to write 5,000 words, and submitted it by
the deadline. The story was called “Tip of the Tongue”, and I expected it to be
the “Taurus” story in that book (subsequently written by Paul Leonard).
Unfortunately
for me, what the editor had actually said was that Big Finish wanted to
commission my story for their second Doctor
Who collection instead. Well, that’ll teach me to (a) read my e-mail more
carefully and (b) wait for the contract. But on the other hand, I did deliver
the manuscript about three months ahead of the new deadline, and that’s
something of a first for me. So now it appears in Short Trips: Companions,
suitably updated and slightly renamed to suit the theme of the second book.
