Alison has worked as a consultant since 1993, initially focusing on Museum Education and more recently specialising in Interpretation and Visitor Studies.

She has worked with museums where she has assessed current museum education provision and made recommendations for development. For example, she developed a Learning Strategy for the Wedgwood Museum and has taken part in the review of the Education & Outreach Department at the National Museums of Ireland (2007). In the past she worked for regional agencies in the West Midlands, South West, North West and Northern Ireland as well as the former Resource/MGC and the University of Leicester on various projects including research, training, teaching, publications and strategy and policy development. A full version of the publication on cultural diversity and social inclusion which she edited for South West Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, is available as a PDF file. More recently she has worked for regional MLAs and museum hubs.

She has worked with DCF-funded museums and galleries as an Interpretation Consultant, supporting the process of developing an Interpretation Strategy , for example at Wiltshire Heritage Museum (download report ) Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum and the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, whilst encouraging visitor consultation at every stage (see Evaluation).

Alison was involved with the project team developing Making It! a hands-on discovery centre in Mansfield on the theme of manufacturing.

Alison led a project introducing Inspiring Learning for All to the Isle of Wight Cultural & Leisure Services division, focusing especially on measuring impact using learning outcomes developed from the Generic Learning Outcomes - full report available.

She worked as a Support Officer for the Campaign for Learning through Museums and Galleries (clmg) supporting seven DFES museum education projects between 1999 and 2002. She also led the team who undertook the Comparison Study of the Museums and Galleries Lifelong Learning Initiative programme for clmg. (Download Comparison Study ).

Alison is also an Expert Adviser to the Heritage Lottery Fund with a special responsibility to scrutinise education, access and involvement elements.
