Alison James, BEd MA AMA, is a Museum Consultant based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, but working throughout the UK and overseas. She has worked in the museum sector since 1988 focusing on learning and evaluation. She has a Museums Associations Diploma and a Masters degree in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester, specialising in museum education. Since 1993 she has been self-employed, working on projects with a variety of different museums and related organisations including small independents, university, local authority and national museums as well as national heritage organisations, a hands-on discovery centre, archives and libraries. She also works with regional and national agencies and overseas museum authorities. Alison has a good network of contacts throughout the profession and an understanding of the reality for museums at grass roots level. She specialises in the following areas: research, evaluation, learning, consultancy, training, strategy and policy development and interpretation. Training in visitor studies and the co-ordination of audience research forms a key element of her work. She has a particular interest in qualitative evaluation. Her overseas work has included training, evaluation and consultancy work in Norway, Sweden, the Baltic states, Portugal and Ireland. She has a good understanding of Scandinavian languages.
