Howard Coles
Howard Coles RCA, trained as a sculptor at Cardiff
School of Art, Wales, following national service in the Royal Navy.
He then embarked on a career as an educator, working in the UK and
abroad. After taking early retirement from his position as head of
faculty at Hope University, Liverpool in the 1990s, Howard has concentrated
on his landscape painting, which he exhibits throughout the UK.
Howard Coles aims to capture the essence of the landscape of North Wales in
his paintings, not slavishly illustrate a scene. Using oil-based mixed
media on paper, board or canvas, the format ranges from small A4 to
full Imperial size or bigger. The larger the painting, the more abstracted
the image. Although using a broad pallet, blue hues usually predominate
as can be seen in the examples shown on this page.
Howard Coles is represented in National collections from Wales to Singapore,
as well as public and private collections world-wide.
