Selwyn was born in Caernarfon in 1933, where he still
lives and paints. William studied at Bangor College and
taught in Caernarfon until he retired in 1990 to become
a full time painter. He is a member of the Royal Cambrian

His work is intensely atmospheric and revolves around the landscapes of Gwynedd,
local farm workers, fishermen on the Menial Straits and also scenes of Venice
which he visits frequently. In 1998 he was a 3rd Prizewinner in the Singer & Friedlander

MARK SAMUEL & NICK HOLLY
Mark Samuel’s enduring popularity stems from his ability to stage scenes
from everyday life in a way which also addresses universal concerns. His contemplative
studies of modern life, captured within the stark landscape of the suburbs of
his hometown, have a timeless quality, revealing the truth about the everyday
life of ordinary people.
In his works, architecture is often cropped in a way to increase psychological
tension and heighten the feeling of isolation.
Nick Holly was born
in 1968. He was brought up in the district of St Thomas on the industrial east
side of Swansea
and studied at Swansea College of Art and
Design.
As his work has developed, so has his reputation as a chronicler of the urban
and industrial landscape of South Wales and in particular the community of St
Thomas, perched above Swansea Docks, within which he still lives.
Also on show
ceramics by Duncan Ayscough.

GARETH THOMAS
Gareth Thomas was
born in Swansea in 1955 and attended Trinity College, Carmarthen. In 1979 he
decided to paint full time and is now considered to be one of Wales’ most
popular artists. He first established his reputation with sensitive watercolour
paintings of the South Wales coast, painting mostly outdoors to capture the constantly
changing light and mood of the landscape. His paintings of the South Wales coastline
and especially of Gower, where he lives, are still much in demand. The beauty
of this landscape
continues to offer fresh challenges.
For some years Provence and Venice have ignited his imagination and pushed him
towards a more interpretative use of paint. As well as watercolour, he now also
works in oil, acrylic and pastel. Each medium has in turn offered him fresh challenges
and a new means to express his response to colour and light.

CERI AUCKLAND DAVIES
Ceri Auckland
Davies was born in West Wales in 1951. He studied at Newport College of Art
and Birmingham Polytechnic.
Since 1992 he has been working in egg tempera on board, mixing all his own paints
from pure pigment. The quick drying nature of the medium allows many thin layers
of paint to build up quickly achieving a distinct luminosity in his work. The
quality of egg tempera allows him to create the atmospheric effects that portray
the varying moods of his landscapes.
Where land meets water has become a recurrent theme in his work. This is explored
in shapes and textures seen along the coastlines of Wales, which are a constant
source of inspiration.

DAVID TRESS
David Tress was born
in London in 1955 and grew up there, showing an early interest in painting, drawing
and natural history. After studying science with biology at A-level, he changed
direction and spent a year at Harrow College of Art, before taking a Fine Art
degree course at Trent Polytechnic. While he was at Trent, he became involved
with experiments in conceptual and performance art but later, came to question
the assumptions of modernism. His rejection of modernism was, however, not so
much a return to the beginning, as a rite of passage, which has brought to his
landscape and figurative painting some aspects of abstraction retained from his
earlier work.
David Tress has lived in West Wales since 1976, and the landscape of this part
of Britain forms the subject of many of his paintings. He has exhibited in Wales,
England, Ireland, France, Holland and America and has works in public collections
including: The National Museum of Wales, The Contemporary Art Society for Wales
and The National Library of Wales. His work has been widely reviewed in newspapers,
magazines of the arts and on television. In 1999, he was one of forty-eight British
artists and designers commissioned by the Royal Mail to design the Millennium
special issue of stamps.
Over many years the north west of Pembrokeshire has provided a core subject for
his paintings for this exhibition at the gallery, contains a group of new works
on this theme. However there are strong contrasts in the exhibition with paintings
of the South of France and Spain presenting a very different, sun beaten and
scorched, landscape. Another group of works explores people in urban environments.
