Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are Hunza lights made from?
Hunza lights are manufactured in three materials 316 Stainless Steel, Copper (these are imported into NZ) and Aluminium Alloy that is smelted in NZ. The Aluminium Alloy is then UV stable powder Coated. Which means that the colour will not fade from the sunrays, standard colours are green, black white and silver. 316 Stainless Steel is one of the top grades and will not tarnish in any way. Copper fittings will gradually darken with age and eventually turn verdigris.

What voltage are Hunza light fittings and what lamps do they use?
All of the fittings are 12 Volt and use Dichroic and capsule lamps these are available in varying watt ratings from 5 up to 50-watt, beam angles from 12 to 60 degrees. The AR1-11 fitting is the only exception, which will take up to a 100-watt lamp. These lamps are available with different beam angles standard angles are 12,36,60 Degree.

Are the lamps open faced?
All of the fittings come with open-faced lamps and all replacement lamps fitted should be the same.

Do Hunza lights come with transformers?
Some Hunza fittings come with an option of having an integral transformer this is particularly useful when routing a transformer is a problem i.e. one cable coming out of the wall. These transformers are rated at 60 VA (volts Output) so these fittings can only take 20-watt lamps they are dimmable with a leading edge dimmer switch. These fittings are refferd to as Retro fittings some of the other fittings are available with this option e.g. Bollard, Pole,Walkway,Twig lite,Border lite and Tier Lites. All of the other fittings will require a remote transformer. These are connected to the mains circuit which would be routed around the border of the garden and should be 240-volt steel wired armoured cable. The transformers should be positioned as near to the fittings as possible as voltage drop is present on the low voltage side. L.I. transformers are IP67 suitable for total burial. UK manufactured, wire wound mechanical transformers totally encapsulated in resin and is dimmable. (Manufacturer 5 year replacement warranty)

What is the main reason for using low voltage fittings?
The main reasons for using low voltage compared to mains voltage fittings:

1/ Safety is the main reason for obvious reasons
2/ Longer Lamp Life average of 5000 hours which is over double mains voltage lamp life.
3/ Lower heat output.
4/ Cheaper to run than mains fittings

What does the abbreviation "IP" ratings stand for?
Abbreviations "IP" ratings stand for Ingress Protection. Protection against ingress of dust, liquids and impact.

The following reference numbers are the ratings for these.

What IP rating is appropriate for submersible fittings?
All fully submersible Light fittings need to be IP68 rated i.e. Hunza Pond & Pool Lites.

How should Cable Jointing be dealt with?
Cable Jointing All cable joints should be either potted in an appropriate IP rated junction box or a suitable heat shrink should be used onto cable connections.

Do Hunza fittings take GU10 Lamps (mains voltage lamps)?
No

What length of cable do the fittings come with?
Cable Lengths on Hunza fittings are generally 1 metre long additional length cable attached to these fittings would need to be ordered from N.Z at an additional cost.

What are the average Lead Times for orders?
Lead times maximum of 2-3 weeks for items out of stock.

What are the benefits of Fluorescent options?
Fluorescent options produce less heat and have longer lamp life can be wired straight into mains.

What does 'Self ballasted' with reference to fluorescent mean?
Self ballasted with reference to fluorescent means that the lamp is complete with starter.

Do Hunza light fittings come complete with lamps?
All Hunza fittings come complete with lamps

What angle are the lamps?
All lamps are a medium angle 38 Deg
