Fitness to work
Employee health assessments directly determine individual’s fitness to work as based upon standards/criteria that have been agreed nationally or within a specific industry sector. This ensures that employees do not undertake work that could have a damaging effect upon their own health or could endanger/negatively affect colleagues/others. Specific occupations routinely require periodic fitness to work assessment. For example;
  • Fork Lift Truck Drivers
  • Food Handlers
  • Breathing Apparatus users
  • Working in Confined Spaces
  • Lone Workers
  • Cold Room Working
  • Working at Heights
The purpose of pre employment health screening is to ensure, as far as possible, that
  • prospective staff are physically and psychologically capable of undertaking the role, taking into account any current or previous illness or injury
  • that their health will not be adversely affected by the hazards and risks of the role
  • consideration is given to the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 for reasonable adjustments
This process enables the establishment of medical records on employment - particularly important to guard against future litigation where there is a significant occupational hazard with a known ill health effect e.g. noise/audiometry.
